Passengers have celebrated the first public crossing of the new Spirit of Tasmania ferries, sailing from Geelong to Devonport overnight, with Premier Jeremy Rockliff saying Tasmania had "stayed the course".

The new ships carried their first paying passengers across Bass Strait after years of delays, with roaming musicians and entertainment on board.

"Everyone was really excited to be part of history," Rockliff told Pulse.

"I see many, many happy faces, so I'm very excited."

Retired dentist Jeffrey Mount, who lives in Launceston, was one of the first onboard and said he had travelled on every Bass Strait ferry since 1950. He called the new ship "massive" and "fantastic".

"So many places to sit down, so much beautiful views both ends."
