What a response to our tomatoes! 🍅

We've been absolutely delighted by the enthusiasm you've shown for our 12 wonderfully different tomato varieties this season. And just when you thought we'd shown you everything, we've been keeping a little secret something something up our sleeves...

Our Tabletop Tomatoes are here!

Already flowering and fruiting like mad, these compact little beauties are ready centerpieces for your patio, outdoor table or sunny corners. Imagine stepping outside to pick a handful of sweet, sun-ripened tomatoes for a fresh spring salad, or simply enjoying them straight from the plant!

At $12.50 each, they're a favourite amongst our wonderful market customers and this year we've been working overtime, just to make sure there's plenty enough to go around.

And finally... the long-awaited BASIL! 🌿

With the warmer days creeping in, our thoughts are turning to fresh garden salads, fragrant homemade pesto, tomato and basil bruschetta, and those delicious fresh meals that taste even better when you've grown the ingredients yourself.

From this week, we'll be offering:

🌿 Sweet Basil
🌿 Thai Basil
🌿 Greek Basil
🌿 Green Holy Basil

With Red Holy Basil still to come!

At $6.50 each, these plants are looking absolutely fabulous, and we can't wait to share them with you.

The long-awaited Lavender Grosso is finally here! 💜

We've been looking forward to this one for quite some time, and we're very happy to say our Lavender Grosso is ready to make its way to the markets this weekend.

Grosso is a beautiful French-bred lavender hybrid, known for its silvery-grey foliage, long elegant flower stems and richly fragrant violet-purple blooms. It's one of the most highly regarded varieties for essential oil production, and those wonderfully long stems make it equally suited to fresh-cut flowers, dried bunches and arrangements.

It's a vigorous, hardy variety that forms a lovely rounded shrub, thriving in full sun but well-drained soil is a must to see her in her full glory. Once established, it's wonderfully drought tolerant, and the bees absolutely adore it.

Aesthetically, Grosso has always been one of our personal favourites. Not that we're supposed to have favourites, of course… but we all know that's not how gardening works!

For our very patient pre-order customers, thank you for hanging in there. We've already been in touch with some of you and will be contacting the remaining customers over the coming week to arrange collection or shipping of your plants.

We'll have a limited number of plants available at the markets this weekend, so as always first in, best dressed.

Here's to the beginning of another dreamy lavender season. We can't wait to see these beauties growing in your gardens. 💜

🌿🍋 AUSTRALIAN NATIVE FINGER LIMES 🌿🍋

Over the past few weeks, we've celebrated our spring citrus range and challenged the idea that avocados can't thrive in Tasmania! This week, we're combining the two with something closer to home – our Australian native finger limes.

These native citrus are hardy, drought tolerant once established and surprisingly productive in late summer! With attractive, dense foliage and naturally bushy growth, they're a wonderful addition to any edible garden.

Often called citrus caviar, their tiny pearls burst with fresh, tangy flavour. Delicious over seafood, in desserts, tossed through salads or added to a refreshing summer drink.

🌱 A FINGER LIME FOR ALMOST EVERY GARDEN!

Finger limes are wonderfully versatile. Grow them as feature plants, incorporate them into edible gardens or keep them in pots.

Short on space? Dwarf varieties offer the same delicious fruit in a more compact plant.

🌿 AND HERE'S AN IDEA YOU MIGHT NOT HAVE CONSIDERED...

Why not grow finger limes as a hedge?

Their dense, bushy growth makes them an interesting alternative to traditional hedging plants. Imagine a beautiful leafy hedge that also provides a delicious harvest of native citrus each summer!

🍋 OUR CURRENT VARIETIES INCLUDE:

🌱 D'Emerald – Regular & Dwarf
🌱 Green Sapphire
🌱 Byron Sunrise – Regular & Dwarf
🌱 Rainforest Pearl
🌱 Dwarf Red Centre

Whether you've room for a full-sized plant or a sunny corner for a dwarf, these Queensland and northern NSW natives can thrive in sheltered Tassie gardens, bringing Australian native flavour to spaces of all sizes!

🥑 Think avocados are just for tropical gardens? Think again! 🥑

Avocados CAN and DO thrive in Launceston, Hobart and surrounding areas! With the right care, growing conditions and a little know-how, you can enjoy these delicious edibles in your own backyard.

At Plants Direct Tasmania, we're big believers in RIGHT PLANT, RIGHT PLACE – and avocados are a perfect example of why this matters!

🥑 MEET OUR BACON & HASS AVOCADO PAIR!

Did you know avocados have two different flowering types?

🌸 Type A – Hass: Flowers open as female first, then reopen as male.

🌸 Type B – Bacon: Flowers follow the opposite pattern, complementing Type A flowering.

Growing both types together can improve pollination and fruit set. That's why we offer our Bacon & Hass avocados as a pollinating pair, taking the guesswork out of choosing varieties!

🌿 RIGHT PLANT, RIGHT PLACE!

Choosing the right spot is essential for happy, healthy avocado trees in Tasmania.

💨 Shelter from wind: Our harsh Tasmanian winds can be tough on avocados! Choose a warm, sunny position protected by windbreaks or suitable shelter.

🌱 DRAINAGE IS ESSENTIAL! Avocados need free-draining soil, preferably sandy or sandy-loam. Their roots are sensitive to waterlogging, which can cause root rot and even kill your tree.

🌧️ Know your soil: Heavy clay or soil that holds water after rain? Consider another position or whether a properly constructed raised planting area could work. Assess your conditions BEFORE planting!

☀️ Warmth matters: A sunny, sheltered spot gives young trees the best chance of success.

💚 Be excited, not scared, to grow something different! The key isn't simply whether a plant can grow in Tasmania – it's understanding what it needs and whether your garden can provide it.

We're always happy to share our knowledge and help you grow with confidence!

One of the things we love about gardening is that no two seasons are ever quite the same. With our winters seeming a little milder and spring arriving earlier, it's always interesting to hear what's thriving in everyone's gardens.

So we'd love to know — what are you most looking forward to growing this spring and summer? 🌻

Or perhaps you've discovered a veggie that's been doing particularly well in your garden over the last few years?

We always enjoy hearing what everyone is growing, and you never know — your experiences might give another gardener a little inspiration for their own patch.

Happy spring planting! 🌱

🫚 LAST WEEK FOR FRESH GINGER! 🌿

This weekend is your last chance to grab our fresh ginger rhizomes for the season!

Fresh ginger is incredibly versatile in the kitchen, adding that unmistakable warm, fragrant zing to both sweet and savoury dishes. Grate or finely slice it into stir-fries, curries, soups and marinades, add it to dressings and dipping sauces, brew it into tea, or use it in cakes, biscuits and desserts.

If you use ginger regularly, now is the time to stock up — it can also be frozen and grated straight from the freezer when you need it. 🫚

🌿 Also available this week — Perilla!

Also known as shiso, perilla is a wonderfully aromatic herb popular in Japanese and Korean cooking. The leaves have a distinctive fresh flavour with notes often compared to mint, basil and anise.

Try it finely sliced through salads, rice or noodle dishes, use whole leaves as wraps, add it to sushi, pair it with grilled meats or seafood, or use it to add a fresh punch to sauces and dressings.

🫚 Fresh ginger rhizomes — FINAL WEEK
🌿 Fresh perilla — available this week

Find us this weekend at:

📍 Harvest Market, Launceston — Saturday
📍 Farm Gate Market, Hobart — Sunday

Come and grab some while it’s fresh and available! 🌱

🌿 Curry Leaf Trees & French Tarragon – available this weekend! 🌿

We have some great-sized Curry Leaf Trees ready to go at both markets this weekend.

🌱 Curry Leaf Tree (Murraya koenigii)
If you enjoy Indian and Sri Lankan cooking, this is a fantastic plant to have on hand. The fresh leaves have a wonderfully aromatic, citrusy flavour and are often fried in oil at the beginning of cooking to release their flavour.

🍛 Try them in:
• Curries and dals
• Coconut-based dishes
• Rice dishes
• Chutneys
• Tempering with mustard seeds, chilli and spices

Curry leaf trees love warmth and sun, but they do need some extra care in our Tasmanian climate. Keep them in a warm, sheltered spot and protect them from cold and frost. They also grow well in pots, which makes it much easier to move them somewhere protected over winter.

🌿 French Tarragon
We also have French Tarragon available — a lovely perennial herb with a distinctive mild anise flavour.

Try it with:
• Chicken and fish
• Eggs and omelettes
• Creamy sauces
• Potatoes and vegetables
• Vinegars and salad dressings

French Tarragon is also the tarragon traditionally used in Béarnaise sauce and is one of the classic French fines herbes.

You can find both at Harvest Market Launceston on Saturday and Farm Gate Market Hobart on Sunday. 🌱

Come and grab one for the herb garden — or, in the case of the curry leaf tree, perhaps a nice warm spot close to the house. 😄

🌱 A LITTLE BIT OF SPRING HAS ARRIVED! 🌱🍋

There’s lots happening in the nursery this week!

Exciting offer incoming — this week only:

🍋 PINKY LEMON — 10% OFF!! 🍋

To celebrate spring being here to stay, we’re offering 10% off our Pinky Lemon (Eureka hybrid) stock for ONE WEEK ONLY!

Usually $75 — this week just $67.50!

A seriously unique citrus variety. Bring your pink lemonade dreams to life — Pinky Lemon has paved the way as the Thai Constellation Monstera of the citrus world… and did we mention the fruit is PINK? 💗🍋

🥬 THE VEGGIES ARE BACK!

You’ve been asking… and we’ve been busy behind the scenes sowing and growing!

Lettuce, Silverbeet & Kale are officially back on the stands, along with more exciting veggie seedlings coming through.

Get in early and start planting out those spring veggie patches! 🌱

🐌 DON’T LET THE SNAILS GET THERE FIRST!

Fresh veggie seedlings are irresistible to slugs and snails.

Multicrop MultiGuard Snail & Slug Killer is our go-to for protecting young, fresh seedlings. This pelletised bait uses an Iron EDTA-based formula and is a lower-risk alternative to many traditional snail baits when used according to the label.

And the best part? As the bait breaks down, its iron components return to the soil. 🌱

🌱 TIP: Scatter it thinly and evenly around your seedlings — never in piles — and always follow the label directions.

When life gives you lemons… it helps to know which lemon you’re getting 🍋

Our new season lemon stock has landed — just in time for the warmer weather (we can taste the lemonade already!).

🍋 Lemonade — Sweet, juicy and much less acidic. Great fresh, in drinks or, naturally, homemade lemonade.

🍋 Meyer — Sweeter and beautifully fragrant, with a hint of mandarin. The one for lemon curd, baking and desserts.

🍋 Eureka — Your classic lemon. Tart, juicy and properly zingy — perfect for cooking, preserving, seafood and drinks.

Available online now, or find us at Harvest Market Launceston and Farm Gate Market Hobart.

A quick citrus spring tip: Keep an eye on that lovely new growth for the tell-tale squiggly trails of citrus leaf miner. Eco-Neem or white oil can help — just avoid oil-based sprays on those really hot days.

It’s also feeding time! A good hit of nitrogen and organic matter will give citrus a boost heading into fruiting season. Neutrog Gyganic Citrus & Fruit or Osmocote Plus Organics Citrus & Fruit are both great options.
