A new pH probe isn't ready out of the box. It needs 24 hours soaking in KCl and a fresh calibration, and most people skip both. Here's the whole swap, start to finish.

The swap: pen off, storage cap off, unscrew the collar, pull the old probe. That's the part that's died, not the pen. Seat the new ProbePlus (there's an arrow so it only goes one way), screw the collar down firm, cap on. Under a minute, no tools.

The bit everyone skips: the new probe goes into KCl storage solution for 24 hours before it touches a reservoir. That rehydrates the glass bulb so it can be calibrated. Never RO, distilled or deionised water. Pure water wrecks the probe.

Next day: calibrate. Fresh 7.0 first, then 4.0. Now it's stable and ready to trust.

Bluelab's tip, and it's a good one: keep a spare probe on the shelf and start soaking it the day before you plan to swap. No downtime mid-crop.

Every pest problem you've ever had was visible two weeks before you saw it.

A customer rang me last month with a spider mite problem. Full-blown, webbing on the tops. I asked how long it had been going on. "Noticed it Tuesday."

It hadn't started Tuesday. It had been under the bottom leaves for three weeks. Every infestation I've ever seen was visible well before anyone saw it. You just have to look in the right three spots.

Under a low, old leaf. Flip it. Stippling looks like tiny pale dots on the top side. Webbing underneath means you're already late.

The stem. Run a finger up it. Sticky residue, deformed new growth, curled leaf edges.

The sticky trap. It shows you what's flying around before anything lands on a leaf.

Sixty seconds, once a week, same day as your reservoir change. Leaf, stem, trap. If you do that and nothing else, you'll catch every outbreak while it's still a five-dollar problem.

Ranunculus start as dry claw-shaped corms pre-sprouted in autumn: soaked, sprouted in trays under lights, then planted out. About six days from a dry claw to roots and shoots when you get the moisture right.

Swipe for the full bloom, the one still closed, and the same flower with the colour pulled out so you can see the structure. Layers on layers.

By the time you can see mites, you're three weeks late.

The people who ring me about mites have one thing in common. They bought the spray after they saw the mites. By then they're three weeks late, because by the time you can see them they've been breeding under the leaves for a month.

The program that actually works is boring:

A weekly preventative foliar while the plants are in veg. Full coverage, undersides especially. That's where everything lives.

Lights off or dimmed while you spray, never under full light.

And fix the environment. A wet, stagnant room breeds the exact thing you're spraying for. Sort the airflow and the humidity or you're mopping the floor with the tap running.

The maths: prevention costs about a bottle a run. Losing a run costs everything in it. The nutrients, the power, the months. You'll see commercial rooms running this program because they've done that sum.

The spray does the hard work. The glue trap tells you the program's working.
