TCL TCL is an internationally acclaimed landscape architecture and urban design interested in the poetic

Since 1989, Taylor Cullity Lethlean have undertaken an investigation into the poetic expression of the Australian Landscape and contemporary culture. This has permeated our design work in a multiplicity of public settings from urban waterfronts to desert walking trails. In each case the detailed exploration of context, site and community have informed outcomes and enriched the patterning and detail of built landscapes. Four streams of investigation have informed the practice’s work:
Contemporary urban life and global culture
The elemental power of site and landscape
Artistic practice in a range of disciplines
The creation of a sustainable future
The results of this dynamic dialogue with clients, communities, academics, and colleagues is an eclectic body of work woven together by a common thread of quality, commitment, and surprisingly simple but rich environments which support the life of the communities they serve. This success is born out of an open studio based approach where the principals lead the design of each project supported by a talented group of landscape architects and urban designers.

Repost Bates Smart
News from Sydney. Allies and Morrison + Bates Smart are leading a team shortlisted for the Bays West International Design Competition. This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to create a rich and enduring urban tapestry for a unique site in the heart of the city.

Together with TCL, Bangawarra and Neeson Murcutt Neille, we bring perspectives shaped by cities across the world and by deep experience within Sydney itself. We’re honoured to be involved in one of the most significant citymaking projects of our time.

We have more stunning photos to share with you from our Melbourne Design Week 2026 exhibition.

The studio was transformed into a lively gallery of sculptural installations that explored the ecological, cultural and botanical themes that have shaped TCL’s garden-making for more than thirty-five years.

TCL’s Adelaide studio marked National Reconciliation Week with a walk on Kaurna Country, along the Karrawirra Pari.

Guided by Paul Herzich, Kaurna and Ngarrindjeri man, landscape architect, artist and Director of Mantirri Design, the walk offered time to listen, learn and reflect on place.

Paul shared stories and introduced the TCL team to public art and design projects, both his own and others'. Tales of significant sites in the region and of Elders and leaders were plentiful. Paul reminded us of the ongoing Kaurna custodianship of Country and his responsibilities to land, community, and culture.

A generous and grounding experience, reminding us that walking on Country is essential to connect to place and culture.

We are beyond delighted to be part of this landmark new luxury resort and tourism destination on the historic Lindeman Estate in Pokolbin in the Hunter Valley, opening in the second half of 2027.  Developed by Dominic Lambrinos of HVL Hotels, Laval marks the first new-build luxury resort development of this scale in the Hunter Valley in two decades.

Laval sits within Australia’s most iconic viticultural landscapes in the Hunter Valley on the hills of a 165-acre site in Pokolbin (formerly Lindeman’s Estate and Ben Ean Estate) - offering expansive 360-degree views of vineyards, valleys and layered rural terrain.
The guest experience unfolds as a journey along the natural contours of the serpentine ridgeline that the resort has been built on. Developed by Lisa Howard of TCL Landscape Architects, the gardens are designed to create a feeling of transition as guests move through increasingly abstract and dreamlike plant formations to discover a series of ‘intricate gems’ along the way - including immersive art installations, lush meadows, calming meditation areas, a Wollemi pine grove, and a striking 25m red-tiled pool, located right along the Shiraz Vineyard.
Across the estate, over 6,782 vines and 21,000 plants, including over 300 different species, will be planted as part of a major ecological regeneration program to restore the site’s former agricultural character and increase birdlife, butterflies and insect activity.

In line with our Reconciliation Action Plan, TCL has updated our approach to the January 26th public holiday so staff can choose what’s right for them.

January 26 means different things to different people. For many First Nations peoples, it is a day of mourning that marks the start of ongoing injustice, dispossession and resistance following the arrival of the First Fleet in 1788.

That’s why we’re formalising what we’ve done in previous years through a new policy, offering all staff the option to swap the public holiday for an alternate day. This practical step reflects our RAP commitments, acknowledges the significance of the conversation, and supports an inclusive workplace where different perspectives are respected.

Today is the International Day of Education, recognising education as a human right and forms the foundations for peace and sustainability. This year’s theme, "The power of youth in co-creating education," is a timely reminder that learning is shaped by the places and communities around it.

At UNSW Kensington, TCL’s Village Green Redevelopment reflects that idea in spatial reality: transforming a once limited-use elite cricket oval into a welcoming wellness precinct that supports sport, social connection and everyday campus life. Co-creation is embedded through "A Well Being" an integrated artwork by Agatha Gothe-Snape, featuring 87 handwritten words and phrases drawn from student and staff consultation, inviting everyone to reflect on what wellbeing means to them.

Designing inclusive, healthy places helps create the conditions where learning can thrive.

Nambour (Namba) is envisioned as a vibrant hinterland hub — a place where cultural heritage, natural landscapes, and community life intertwine.

Together with the Sunshine Coast Council, TCL has developed a Place Plan that draws on the patterns of climate, the living fabric of trees, celebratory vistas, and site-specific narratives to reimagine streets and spaces that express care, continuity, and belonging.

A framework for people, nature, and culture — shaping a future that feels both grounded and full of possibility.

Namba sits on the land of the Kabi Kabi people.

The article in The Age today beautifully captures the vision behind the new elephant habitat at Werribee Open Range Zoo.

“We wanted the elephants to make decisions, particularly the matriarch… That’s exactly what a matriarch in a wild herd would be doing, taking the herd to a different area to find food. And that’s pretty groundbreaking,” Dr. Mark Pilgrim, Zoo Director.

For us at TCL, this project was about creating a living landscape where elephants can roam, swim, and explore, while visitors experience the majesty of these animals in a setting that feels natural and immersive.

"It was really about observing and understanding what the animal habits were... what do Elephants like to do?"

Lisa Howard, TCL Director, reflects on our commitment to designing spaces that prioritise the elephants’ perspective. The habitat includes deep swimming pools, open roaming zones, and even visitor underpasses – creating an immersive yet respectful experience.

This was a true collaboration with an exceptional team:
