Often the outcome looks like it was an easy win.

If you look at the next pic you can see that this site is landlocked with high brick walls along the north & south.

This view doesn’t show the tetris that went into getting daylight deep into the living spaces, close connection to green & natural ventilation.

Often we get approached because there isn’t an easy answer. The satisfaction is in finding one anyway.

And then getting a great team on board.

The existing weatherboard front vs the new extended back.

They speak a common language but are very different. The existing front has character & charm but has been altered & not well maintained.

Being Victorian, it has a pleasing front but lacks thermal performance or orientation awareness.

This is what the extension brings; a sympathetic aesthetic, high thermal performance & plays to solar orientation, with operable shadings & openings.

Micro-courtyard

This courtyard will light up the kitchen, dining & living.

Sometimes you need to build along the northern boundary, when this is the case, a little sun trap can be carved out as an aperture to bring daylight deep into the living spaces.

Today’s site visit was all about windows. They are in & the rooms are starting to get the first layers of added detail & character.

It was also helpful to check joinery, the electrical layout & cladding & make some last minute changes before these next stages are locked in.

Changes could be extra powerpoints, a different appliance, a tweak to a material selection, small changes that bring long term satisfaction & amenity.
