This time last week, we had the pleasure of visiting Sunnymeade Garden in the then sun-drenched Strathbogie Ranges.
Today, it’s a very different picture and we’re grateful for this beautiful rain rehydrating our landscape.
Reflecting on our visit, I’m reminded of the importance of time. I’ve said before that gardens need a good relationship with time and that time spent with those we love is precious.
This year alone, Mum and I have prioritised time together through our shared love of gardening. We’ve created a new garden, worked together in our home gardens and visited 15 different gardens across Australia and Japan. How lucky are we 💚
A garden 40 years in the making carries the unmistakable hand, heart and story of its maker.
Sunnymeade Garden is the life’s work of Craig Irving and family and an extraordinary expression of European and Islamic garden design, where formality, structure and colour come together in a landscape that feels worlds away.
Visiting the Strathbogie Ranges itself is like stepping back in time. Enormous, ancient granite boulders rise from the rolling landscape, creating a rugged and timeless sense of place. Nestled within this remarkable setting, Sunnymeade Garden reveals a gardeners world.
Inspired by gardens from faraway places and centuries past, its carefully considered forms, layered sometimes incidental planting and vibrant borders invite you to slow down and look a little closer.
“This is the Louvre of Gardens in this region,” said Mary, a fellow garden visitor we met as we wandered.
And we would have to agree. The design decisions and rear plant choices that have matured over 40 years here are truly museum-worthy beauties.
Thank you, Craig and John, for having us and sharing this very special place. We wish John all the very best in his recovery.
