A look back at a renovation that brought a lot more warmth and light into this home.

Window placement made a big difference to the light inside + reworking the kitchen and dining area made better use of the space. Some lovely timber features add warmth to the home and the sliding doors connect to a large deck for outdoor living space.

It’s so satisfying looking back and seeing the difference thoughtful design can make.

We’ve had quite a few new faces join us here lately, so we thought it’s a good time to (re)introduce ourselves and share a little of what we care about.

In a nutshell that’s:

PEOPLE, PLACE + PLANET.

And designing thoughtful homes that can do a little better by all three. 🌱

How to keep your project on budget: Before you do anything make a good decision!

Making a good decision on the direction of your project is the first step in a successful project. This is harder to do than it seems because there are endless possibilities. Just because it’s a possibility doesn’t mean it’s right for you and your financial capacity.

We have some resources that can help you with this: our values-led briefing process and feasibility.

Good decision making is an art and a science and hard to do!

Like Jane, Seb is also a fan of Hempcrete. His preferred option for sustainability, however, would be using recycled materials when possible…

“How good’s hempcrete?! Certainly one of my favorites also. Hopefully the approval process on the product becomes easier in the future.

I think the ultimate material is any recycled material... whether it’s recycled old red bricks, timber, roof sheeting etc. It goes with the saying: ‘they don’t make things like they used to’, and you can use these materials in a variety of creative uses such as bricks as wall cladding, internal feature timber, furniture etc. This is a great way to add character to a new home / reno, express creativity and stop good materials ending up in landfill.

The coolest thing about this is, it’s up to the homeowner to find such materials and apply them - apart from partners getting sick of hoarded building materials in sheds! 😂”

We’re sharing our team’s choices of sustainable materials this week. Here is Jane’s pick:

“I’d have to say Hempcrete is number 1. But this needs to be considered for a project from the outset and the project needs to be designed with this material in mind for it to be efficient. It’s also important to note that using Hempcrete is considered a non-standard building material and will add complexity to your approval process as it requires a performance solution.”

Good design is in the details. The little choices that make a home healthier and nicer to live in, while treading a little lighter on the planet.

This week, we’re sharing some of our favourite sustainable materials that are just so good! They might even give you a few ideas to consider for your own project.

First up is: Rosie. 🌿

There’s a lot to love about the thinking behind Passive House. We absolutely want homes that stay comfortable with far less energy, that are well insulated, well detailed and designed to perform.

But lately we’ve been pondering where the pursuit of perfect performance fits within the much bigger picture of climate-conscious design.

Because a house doesn’t exist in isolation. The materials came from somewhere. They took energy to make and transport. The house sits within a particular climate and landscape. Someone has to build it properly. And then people move in and start living in it, in all the wonderfully imperfect ways we do.

So how far do we need to go? We reckon the answer is going to be different for every house. For some people, full Passive House certification can make perfect sense. For another site, budget + lifestyle, the better outcome might be taking the principles that matter most and finding a thoughtful middle ground to design a home that performs beautifully, uses fewer resources, feels good to live in and has a minimal impact on the planet over its lifetime.

That idea of enoughness keeps sneaking into everything we do.

Passive House construction is unachievable for so many people… Financial sustainability is a real thing!
