Gac ($30ea) is an Asian delicacy and Aussie native climbing vine that grows natively in tropical parts of northern Australia and Southeast Asia.

It produces big, bumpy fruits that turn red-orange when ripe.

You need at least two plants to get fruit. Gac has separate male and female vines, so you need both to supply pollen and produce fruit.

The best part to eat is the bright red coating around the seeds. It has a mild, creamy taste similar to avocado or cucumber, but must be cooked into foods. Simply scoop out the red seeds and scrape off the flesh. People like to cook it with sticky rice to color it orange, or mix it into soups, smoothies, and curries.

Huge in Vietnam and Thailand especially.

Mila Pineapple ($20) is an easy one for any Perth garden because it thrives in our hot summers and sandy soils while giving you both striking looks and sweet mini fruit.

Unlike standard tropical fruit trees that take up more space and care and struggle with heat stress this dwarf red pineapple loves the sun and handles dry spells with ease.

It fits into tight courtyard spots, looks fantastic on a hot patio, and brings a touch of the tropics straight into your backyard or near the swimming pool without any hassle.

The benefits go well beyond just getting fresh fruit. The plant features brilliant red, orange, and purple leaves year round, followed by a bright purple flower spike and sweet mini red pineapples.

The fruit is low in acid, juicy, and perfect for eating straight off the plant, tossing into salads, or using as a decorative garnish. Even showing off at school or work.

Because it stays compact, you can easily grow it in a 30cm pot on a sunlit porch or set it out as an eye-catching accent in a warm garden bed.

After fruiting, the mother plant produces offshoots called pups, meaning you can easily slice them off, plant them up, and grow your patch for free.

Growing Mila in Perth Metro is as easy as it gets. It needs very little water once established and prefers a spot in full sun, which brings out the richest colors in the foliage and drives strong fruiting.

All it asks for is free-draining soil or a good quality potting mix with extra perlite or coarse sand so its roots stay dry and healthy in winter wet. During winter, simply keep it in a sheltered spot away from heavy frost, feed it through spring and summer, and let it do its thing.

$15, $45, $90

Tamarind fruit helps the body remove extra fluoride.

Scientists tested this at the National Institute of Nutrition. They added tamarind pulp to the daily meals of young boys.

The kids peed out significantly more fluoride when they ate tamarind. The fruit makes urine less acidic. This shift helps the kidneys flush out fluoride before it builds up in bones.
The paper was published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition. The study authors concluded: "Tamarind intake is likely to help in delaying progression of fluorosis by enhancing urinary excretion of fluoride."

Tamarind acts as a simple food aid for fluoride removal. However, it also changes how the body handles minerals like zinc and magnesium.

It works best as a normal part of a balanced diet.

I step out my back door onto an old patio, leaving behind the dark clutter of the house.

My back garden is small but vast, squeezed between tall fences and the low rumble of Roe Hwy as traffic humming away in the distance.

But inside those fences, I have built my own dense wall of green.

I step onto the messy mulched path under the canopy. Lilly pilly, mulberry, Aztec fruit, peanut tree crowd together overhead, blocking out the roofs around me.

Within three paces, the air changes. It feels cooler on my skin and smells rich and heavy with damp earth, crushed bush basil and lemon myrtle.

I take a deep breath, pulling that fresh air into my lungs. Up in the leaves, the trees have spent the sunny morning releasing phytoncides to protect themselves.

I cannot see them, but as I breathe them in, my body goes to work, using those natural compounds to lift my immune markers and build up my NK cells.

My senses settle right away. The thick layers of leaves cushion the harsh noise of cars from the road, swapping it for the soft rustle of paperbark foliage in the breeze.

Looking up at the dappled sunlight playing across green leaves gives my eyes a place to rest. I feel my shoulders drop, my breathing slow down, and that steady tension in my chest eases up as my heart rate settles and my stress drops away.

I sit down on the small timber bench tucked between my jaboticaba and cherry of Rio Grandes. I am still surrounded by houses and suburban noise, but inside my tiny pocket of trees, my body is soaking up the exact same quiet medicine as I would in a deep forest.

Sometimes doing nothing is all you need.
