ALL YOUR HARD WORK THROUGHOUT THE YEAR SHOULD BE PAYING OFF NOW…

You’ve pruned and fed your fruit trees and berries all year long and in a mid-spring garden you should start to see all that work paying off!

Trees and berries should be flowering or fruiting and bees should be out in force, pollinating everything in sight.

So now you need to just bring it home! And one of the key jobs you need to complete in mid-spring to guarantee a harvest, is netting.

This year I’m experimenting a little between using big nets that enclose the whole tree and individual bags over the fruit, protecting each one. I’ll be sharing the results as the season carries on!

Are you working in the garden this weekend? Comment below on what trees you’re working on and where and I’ll give you an extra job to do to give that tree a boost!

ALL THE TROPICAL FRUITS NEED FEEDING!

If it’s mid-spring where you are, that probably means you’re stonefruits, pomme fruits and berries have either started flowering, or have already been pollinated and are bearing fruit.

And while that’s very exciting, if you still have flowers or the fruit are very small, it’s better to hold off on fertilising those trees for now. A nice worm or compost tea tonic application will make them happy, but fertilising could cause the flowers and fruit to drop.

Mid-spring is the time to make your tropical fruit trees shine! A solid feed heading into summer will mean more production at the end of the season and a healthier tree that can withstand those hot days.

So clear some space in your calendar this weekend or next and get out there feeding!

THIS WAS SUCH A HARD LIST TO MAKE!

I love all of my fruit trees - the loquat, the guava, all the stonefruit and pomme fruit. But if I had to nut it down to 5 of my favourite backyard fruit trees, then these are the ones I would choose.

Some are because I’m being cheap (as if I would ever pay $1.50 for a lemon in the supermarket!). Some are because it genuinely scares me what the store bought version could have sprayed all over it (berries anyone?) 🫐

But mostly it’s because of the incredible taste of homegrown. It’s always sweeter, has more depth and makes dishes and baked treats taste 150% better?

Have you ever wanted to learn how to grow your own fruit in your small space backyard? Follow along for a tonne of tips and info, direct from my experimental backyard!

IT’S GETTING TOO WARM WHERE I AM TO START PLANTING STONEFRUIT…

But that doesn’t mean there aren’t some fantastic beginner fruit trees that can still be planted in mid-spring!

I’m also adding mulberries and olives to this list - both prolific producers and both very hardy and can survive without a huge amount of maintenance.

As well as these trees, there are a tonne of fruit seeds you can plant out in mid-spring. Get your watermelon, rockmelon and honeydew seeds in the dirt now to give them plenty of time to mature and sweeten at the end of summer.

Got a question about whether you can plant a fruit tree or berry now that the weather is heating up? Ask away in the comments below and tell me where in the world you are so I can give you a better answer.

Happy growing!

LONG WEEKENDS MEAN A LITTLE EXTRA TIME IN THE KITCHEN…

So I picked some strawberries and made some cordial.

Natural soda mixes and fermented drinks are a great, healthy alternative to sweetened and sugary drinks.

And if you’re growing your own fruit in your backyard, making your own natural sodas can also save you a heck of a lot of money!

This cordial screams spring to me - it’s that awesome time of the year where there are still lemons on the tree and the berries are coming in. Perfection.

An extra tip? If you make this recipe, when you seive off the cordial into your sterile jar, you can use the seived off strawberry/lemon pulp and add it to a homebaked cake or some muffins.

Enjoy!

YES, I TRIPPED OVER RUNNING AT MY CITRUS TREES LIKE THAT…

But…I had a very important message I needed to share.

Citrus are some of the most popular trees to grow in backyards here in Perth and I’ve seen lots planted in neighbouring backyards this winter. Yay!

Some newly planted trees benefit from a “head cut” after they are first put in the ground…a cut that essentially halves the height of the tree. It’s beneficial for stonefruit and pomme fruit trees.

But citrus are an exception. Neither baby nor adult citrus like a really hard prune and it breaks my heart when I see lemon trees cut down to a stump year on year!

Citrus trees like a lighter prune, but more often. Monthly, if you can manage it. Pruning this way improves the growth, health and fruiting of your citrus.

But what about citrus gall wasp I hear you say? If the gall eggs have already hatched out (leaving holes in the wood), pruning that off isn’t going to do anything. The pest has come in, done what it needed to and gone.

Prune out citrus gall wasp that is swollen and unhatched on new growth. That’s the key to not having to hack your tree back down to nothing.

Want to learn more about how to care for your citrus trees? I will be hosting a workshop (one online and one in person) in late November, sharing tips and tricks on pruning and feeding citrus and how to manage the pesky citrus gall wasp!

NOT EVERY SEASON OF LIFE IS A GARDENING SEASON 🤣

I share with you a lot of tips, tricks and “rules” about growing fruit trees and berries on this page. And I hope you find them helpful!

But it doesn’t make you a bad person if you don’t get on top of them all!

Some seasons of life, there is plenty of time for being in the garden. In others, there’s not.

Personally, I am undergoing some big changes in my life. So I’m going to cut myself some slack out here in the garden.

Remember, social media is a version of a story, but rarely the whole story. So don’t let any “versions” make you feel like you can’t be a good gardener. You can!

Have you got an embarrassing section of your garden? Tell me about it in the comments below, or DM me a picture. We can have a laugh together! 🤣

NECTARINES - ONE OF THE MOST DELICIOUS AND REWARDING FRUIT TREES TO GROW IN YOUR BACKYARD 😋

It’s early spring where I live in Perth, Australia. My nectarine tree has set fruit and it’s time to net and protect it from the dirty fruit fly! 🪰

But there are plenty of other things to do throughout the year to improve the health and increase the likelihood of a good harvest from a nectarine tree 🌳

Whilst what I’ve shared here are basic details, they lay a minimum foundation for a happy, healthy nectarine tree 🍑

If you would like a month-to-month nectarine care calendar that is adapted to your general climate and provides specifics around what and when to feed, prune, net, supplement, thin (everything!), you need one of my fruit tree care calendars.

I have calendars for all different types of trees - apples, bananas, berries, citrus, pomegranate, olive - whatever you may be growing!

Orders for September are closed, but if you would like to be added to the waitlist for October, comment CALENDAR below!

Happy growing! 🪏

I’VE GOT ONE INFESTED TREE ON MY HANDS…

But I’m glad to be able to show you what peach leaf curl is and how we can manage and prevent it.

Whilst the tree won’t die from this fungal infection, it does slowly weaken it and it will reduce the amount of fruit you get from year to year.

Ideally, you would spray the branches and leaves with a copper soap before bud break…but that’s just half the treatment.

Even after spraying with copper soap a tree can get re-infested, especially if it has poor air circulation and the fungal disease has gotten into the soil.

So focus on tree hygiene (removing diseased leaves and branches, airflow) and microbial support (compost tea, worm castings).

I look forward to my nectarine harvest every year, but I’ll be glad to get through this one, just to work on the health of this tree!
