Slightly overdue introduction!

Nik Cutten joined Cynosure back in June and has been a big part of the studio's growth over the past few months.

With a strong interest in architectural design, 3D visualisation and exploring ideas through modelling, Nik has already made his mark on a number of our projects.

It's been great having his creativity, enthusiasm and fresh perspective in the studio, and we're looking forward to seeing his contributions continue to grow.

A belated welcome to Cynosure, Nik!

A few interior studies from an earlier iteration of a very exciting project we're working on.

The architecture is already evolving, but there are ideas here we’re keen to carry forward. Natural light drawn deep into the plan, landscape becoming part of the interior, and a warm, restrained material palette throughout.

Sometimes the bits left behind still help define where a project goes next.

Dandalup House.

A simple rural home designed around a long, familiar gable form, with the planning kept equally straightforward.

The living spaces open towards the landscape, while the raked ceiling carries the external form through the centre of the house. Timber, deep eaves and climbing vegetation soften what is deliberately a fairly restrained building.

We recently revisited the project with a new series of images by .shaakya in our studio, exploring some of the interior spaces that hadn't previously been visualised.

A good little project!

Rediscovery House | Trigg

Previously known in the office as the ‘Pizza Hut House’ after a fairly spectacular swing and miss on our first concept.

Sometimes a design needs to go backwards before it can properly move forward.

The revised scheme retains the character of the existing home, but reworks it into something more deliberate, with a stronger street presence, better proportion and a clearer relationship between old and new.

A renovation that has taken a few turns, but is now heading towards DA in a direction we’re very happy with.

A little preview of what we’ve been working on elsewhere in Metricup.

The wellness component is beginning to take shape around a series of quiet, landscaped spaces, with views pulled through the buildings and out across the property.

A big effort from the team on this one too, with playing a big part in the development here.

Still plenty to resolve, but very happy with where this one is heading.

Metricup House

in our office has been hard at work testing out his 3D printer on the Metricup House.

Stoked with the result - there’s nothing quite like seeing the full building take shape as a physical model.

A very cool addition to the design process!

Sabella Estate.

A home shaped around its landscape — framing the vineyard, distant water and changing conditions of the South West from almost every part of the house.

From sheltered courtyards and planted terraces through to expansive living spaces, the architecture is designed to feel embedded in the estate rather than simply placed within it.

Currently in design development in Metricup, WA.

Almost three years ago, we made the decision to sell Koto House.

We designed it for ourselves, built it, lived in it, and watched our daughter spend some of her earliest years there.

Looking back at this footage now is a strange one. I was a little fresher, our daughter was a lot smaller, and there are certainly things about the house I’d design differently today.

It had its quirks and its issues, but it was ours. It taught me a lot about architecture, particularly the difference between designing a house and actually living in one.

Three years on, we still miss it.

Foundry House, Cowaramup.

An early concept that never made it beyond the design stage, but one we still enjoy looking back on.

A collection of simple pitched forms arranged around a protected central courtyard, using the house itself to create shelter, privacy and a series of connected outdoor spaces.

Not every project gets built. Still plenty worth keeping from the ones that don’t.

Dandalup House.

One from the concept archive.
Developed with EcoKit around a simple rural form, a high-performance envelope and a generous southern outlook for outdoor living.

Our involvement concluded at concept design, but still very fond of where we landed with this one.
