We're heading into summer, AKA peak pool season, so let’s have a quick chat about stabiliser.
As in… what even IS it?
Basically, it’s sunscreen for your chlorine. ☀️💦
Here’s what you need to know:
Q: Why do I need it?
Stabiliser helps stop the sun’s UV rays from breaking down your chlorine too quickly. And with more sun in summer, it matters even more.
Q: What happens if it’s too low?
Your chlorine can disappear faster. You might be constantly topping it up, or notice cloudy or green water creeping in. Nobody wants that two days before Christmas.
Q: Can I have too much?
Yep! More isn’t better. Too much stabiliser can actually make your chlorine less effective.
Q: How do I know if it’s right?
Test it. You can’t eyeball this one. Your local pool shop can check it, or use a suitable home test kit.
Q: What level should it be?
It depends on your pool and sanitising system, so always follow the recommendations for your equipment.
Q: What if it’s out of whack?
Too low? Stabiliser can be added.
Too high? You may need to replace some pool water.
And please, no “she’ll be right, chuck a bit more in.” 😉
Test it. Balance it. Then get back in the pool.
