This client chose very high doors on every door in the house, including the bathroom, an upgrade I'm passionate about because it just looks grand, but they also went for a hobbed shower, which some people like for the security of a little room to move if something gets stuck, though personally I prefer hobless in a brand new home with how well shower waste systems work now, and they skipped the full height tiling and shower nook from the display home, which is why I always say I build for my clients but will always tell them if a choice could be a mistake.

These clients chose a 300 by 600 tile and laid it lengthways because it makes the room feel longer, one of the pre-start choices that can change how a space feels, along with a builder spec stone benchtop with veining for a marble look without the marble price, a rear master bedroom, and a kitchen with a corner bench and sink, a feature wall to hide mess, and no window behind the cooktop because those get messy and are hard to clean.

Once your Offer and Acceptance (OA) on your land is countersigned, you get to start the fun part, designing the home you'll actually live in, from wide doors or tall doors to where your bed goes and where you want your power points, and since you could be living in it for 5, 10, 20 or even 30 years I want to make sure it's right for you, a design process that can take anywhere from 1 to 4 weeks to get done properly.

Remember the pipes we saw at slab stage? This is where they lead, with electrics, cold water and waste all set up for an island bench with a sink and a hidden power point, a really nice touch, and it shows exactly why you can't make structural changes once your working drawings are done, because pre-work like this is very hard to change once it's in.

WA is built into four sections, north coast, north inland, south coast and south inland, and on this WA Building Guide road trip I'm driving the north coast including Banksia Grove, where after driving a handful of estates you can really see which developers prioritise how an estate looks and feels over profit and which put profit over livability, and sometimes it is glaringly obvious, which is exactly why you should drive an estate before you buy land.

The Cherry design by Move Homes is one of my favourite display homes because only five things differ from a real customer's house, and this is a real client's Cherry home at lockup, where the front room that is an office in the display becomes a media room, the windows are a little smaller to meet 7 star energy requirements, and power points are set up high for the TV, a great way to see what a display home looks like once it is actually built in WA.
