WEDNESDAY CARPENTRY TIP: A DAMAGED DOOR JAMB MAY NOT NEED FULL REPLACEMENT

Localised damage from impact, pets or failed fixings can sometimes be repaired without removing the entire door frame.

The right approach depends on whether the damage is limited to the architrave or surface timber, or whether it has affected the jamb, hinges, latch area or structural fixing behind it.

A proper inspection will determine whether a local repair is suitable or a broader replacement is the better long-term option.

PROJECT IN PROGRESS: PREPARING A GARDEN SHED BASE

This small shed project started by excavating the area so the supporting timber frame could sit level with the surrounding ground.

The H4 treated timber frame was cut and assembled, installed with star posts, levelled and used to secure the shed base ready for the remaining assembly.

It is the work underneath that gives the finished shed a reliable starting point.

BEHIND JARMO: WHEN A PRODUCT ISSUE CHANGES THE PLAN

Not every delay on site comes from the building itself. Sometimes a product arrives with packaging, protective film or assembly details that take far longer to manage than expected.

When that happens, the sensible approach is to stop, protect the materials and agree on the next step rather than rushing and damaging the finish.

Clear communication and a practical plan keep the job moving while protecting the client’s materials and the quality of the finished work.

WEDNESDAY CARPENTRY TIP: A GOOD SHED STARTS WITH THE BASE

Before a garden shed goes together, the supporting base needs to be level, square and properly secured.

If the base is out, the wall panels can fight the fixings, door openings may not line up and the finished shed can rack or twist. Checking the diagonals, levels and fixing points early saves a lot of trouble later.

The right base depends on the shed, the site and the intended use, so it is worth sorting before assembly begins.

SLOW IS SMOOTH. SMOOTH IS FAST.

It is a saying I used daily when I was an instructor in the RAAF, and it applies just as well to carpentry.

It does not mean dragging a job out. It means taking the time to understand the task, plan the sequence, check the measurements and prepare properly before committing.

Rushing the setup creates mistakes. Mistakes create rework — and rework costs more time than doing it properly in the first place.

That principle has followed me from the RAAF into JARMO Carpentry: prepare carefully, work methodically and get it right.

WEDNESDAY CARPENTRY TIP: DO NOT IGNORE DAMAGED TIMBER CLADDING

Peeling paint can be a maintenance issue, but cracked, soft or badly weathered cladding may indicate that moisture has reached the timber beneath the coating.

Warning signs worth checking include:

- Boards that feel soft or crumbly
- Splitting around joins and fixings
- Paint repeatedly lifting in the same area
- Gaps opening between boards or trims
- Water staining around windows and doors
- Damage concentrated near the bottom of walls

The visible board may not be the only issue, so damaged cladding should be inspected before deciding whether a local repair or broader replacement is appropriate.

If you are concerned about an area of timber cladding, send through clear photos, your suburb and a short description.

HOURLY RATE OR FIXED PRICE — WHAT SUITS YOUR JOB?

Not every carpentry job needs to be priced the same way.

Hourly, minimum, half-day or day rates can suit smaller jobs where the work is straightforward but the exact time may vary. A fixed labour price is often better for larger jobs once the scope, materials and site conditions are clearly understood.

Whichever approach suits the job, the important part is agreeing on it before work begins and explaining what is included. If something unexpected is uncovered, I will discuss it with the client before carrying out additional work outside the agreed scope.

Have a job in mind? Send through the details and I can recommend the most sensible way to price it.

WEDNESDAY CARPENTRY TIP: PROTECT FRESHLY CUT EXTERIOR TIMBER

Treated timber is manufactured for outdoor use, but cutting or drilling it can expose fresh timber that may need additional protection.

Applying a suitable timber preservative to cut ends, notches and drilled areas helps maintain protection where the original treatment envelope has been disturbed.

Good exterior timber work also considers:

- Keeping end grain away from standing water
- Allowing drainage and airflow
- Using fixings suited to the treatment and exposure
- Protecting horizontal framing surfaces where appropriate
- Following the timber supplier's installation requirements

It is a small step during construction that can help the finished work perform better over time.
