A block like this has a lot to say before the first wall goes up.

Steel on site, the slab poured, blocks stacked and ready, and a view that explains why anyone would build here. The slope makes the planning matter more. It's also what makes the finished home worth it.

Some of the rooms from one finished home.

Every room in a set of plans gets decided long before anyone picks tile or paint, but you'd never know it from the finished result. Each space earns its place in the house, and each one has to work on its own and as part of the whole at the same time. That's harder than it sounds. A living room that's beautiful in isolation and doesn't flow into the kitchen beside it is a room that fights the house around it.

None of it happened by accident. Sightlines, proportions, where the light falls through the day, what you see first when you walk in the front door, all of it gets worked through at concept stage, long before construction starts.

Swipe through a few of the spaces that came out of that process, each one designed to work with the rest of the house, not as a series of separate decisions.

There are more splashback options than glass or tile, and the difference matters more than most people realise until they're standing in a supplier showroom overwhelmed.

Glass gives you a seamless, easy-clean surface and shows colour beautifully, but it shows every water mark and fingerprint too, and a scratch means replacing the whole panel. Tile gives you texture and pattern and hides daily wear far better, but the grout lines need real maintenance behind a cooktop. Stone matched to the benchtop looks considered, and it is, in both directions, look and price. Mirror and metallic finishes do extraordinary things with light in a small kitchen and show every mark twice.

None of these is the right answer on its own. The right answer depends on how the kitchen is actually used, who's cleaning it, and what's happening on the benchtop either side of it. That's a design decision, not a showroom decision, and it's one we work through with every client rather than leaving until the last minute when the builder needs an answer.

Lois is usually the first person you'll actually speak to, and the one who keeps things moving once your project is underway.

She looks after accounts, scheduling and coordination, which sounds like admin until you realise it's the thing that actually determines whether a job runs smoothly or turns into a series of "where are we up to" phone calls. When you want to know where your job is at, you ask Lois. Not because nobody else knows, but because she's the one who actually keeps track of it in real time.

She's been with Rufus Design Group since 2005. Anyone who's worked with her more than once already knows how much of the practice's day-to-day reliability comes down to her.

Trevor and James design the house. Lois is the reason the process around it doesn't fall apart while they're doing it.
