Horizon House, NSW North Coast

Shelter: A place providing temporary protection

The Australian coastline is a landscape of exposure; to sun, wind, salt and weather. Coastal Architecture requires a balance between exposure to & protection from these elements.

Horizon House responds by creating shelter without retreating from its setting.

Beneath the elevated living level, the architecture provides a protective plane while remaining open to the landscape. Permeable screens temper the elements rather than exclude them, allowing light, air and views to move through the space.

A place that is both exposed and protected, connected to the coast, while offering shelter from it.

BEFORE / AFTER: Seeing potential differently.

Good Architecture is about more than making things look beautiful. It’s about unlocking the value in what already exists.

This tired semi-detached house became an opportunity to rethink how a modest footprint could work harder. Through a Feasibility Study with DUO Architects, we explored how thoughtful design could transform the home into a light-filled, contemporary interior while retaining the character that makes it unique.

A new pitched roof introduces generous ceiling heights. The interior opens up to create a more connected, open-plan layout, with considered storage integrated throughout. Original heritage details are restored, while carefully placed openings strengthen the relationship between the interior and the outdoors.

Less about starting again. More about seeing what’s possible.

A considered transformation that adds lasting value, respects the existing structure and gives this little lady a new lease on life.

Even the client’s cat approves.

YOUR HOME HAS POTENTIAL. LET’S FIND IT!

Horizon House, NSW North Coast.

A restrained coastal form juxtaposed against the rugged headland.

Two quiet horizontal planes take their cue from the horizon beyond, contrasting with the irregularity and texture of the landscape below.

Architecture as a simple gesture within a wild coastal setting.

Horizon House, NSW North Coast

At ground level, living becomes more casual, sandy feet & wet dogs are welcome. A sheltered extension of the landscape where the distinction between inside and out disappears.

Operable screens allow the space to be opened completely to the ocean and surrounding dunes, or closed down for shade, privacy and protection when coastal conditions change.

Above, the elevated main living level captures the view; below, a flexible coastal room connects directly with the landscape.

A minimalist beach house showcasing true timeless design.

Horizon House, NSW North Coast

Where two horizontal planes echo the endless line of the horizon.

Sliced horizontally, the main living level is raised above the coastal landscape, opening the home to uninterrupted views of the ocean beyond.

A restrained mid-century inspired form keeps the architecture deliberately quiet, long lines, expansive glazing and a restrained yet robust material palette allowing the site itself to be the feature.

Below, a more casual indoor-outdoor living space sits directly within the dunes, creating two distinct ways of inhabiting the coast.

Planning a sea change or a mid century inspired project? Reach out, we'd love to hear what you have in mind.

Breakline House, Queenscliff

Constraints fuel Creativity.

A south-facing site with a six-metre slope became the catalyst for The Breakline House.

Rather than working against the terrain, the house steps with it creating an expansive home with level, step-free access, designed to support its owners well into the future.

The unique architectural roof form folds up to to the north capturing natural light, while the internal spaces remain focused on the views to the south, turning the site’s constraints into its defining opportunities.

Architecture doesn’t erase constraints. It finds possibility within them.

Every site holds possibilities. Our Feasibility Studies uncover them. Get in touch to discuss your project.

The Gunners House, Fairlight

Bringing natural light deep into a south-facing semi is a common design challenge that can make or break a project.

A long, uninterrupted ‘gun-barrel’ axis draws the eye through the home toward the rear courtyard, emphasising the length of the site & the importance of the hallway in traditional semi detached floor plans.

At its centre, the stairwell becomes a three-storey lightwell. A frameless skylight above draws natural light down through each level, illuminating spaces that would otherwise sit deep within the plan.

More than circulation, the stair becomes a source of light, turning one of the site’s inherent constraints into an architectural opportunity.

The Gunners House, Fairlight

A space between old and new.

Sitting at the transition point between the original semi and the contemporary addition, this Master Bedroom embraces both stages of the home’s evolution.

Ornate detailing is contrasted with exposed steel, refined integrated joinery & hidden wardrobes, while above, the ceiling divides; a new raked roof appearing to float beyond the original decorative ceiling.

This unique space celebrates the home's evolution, preserving it's history while welcoming it's future.

We specialise in renovations of Heritage listed, Conservation & character homes.

The Gunners House, Fairlight

Quality of space isn't measured in square metres.

A well planned space with natural light, considered materials and a connection to landscape can transform the experience & value of a home without unnecessarily increasing its footprint.

At DUO, we believe the greatest value isn’t always found in more space, but in making better use of what already exists.

Utilising the existing footprint of this south facing semi, a generous Kitchen, Dining & Living area was created with a soaring 4.5m raked ceiling.

This highly considered space is simple in expression yet generous in light, storage and connection to the rear courtyard.
