ON REFLECTION. The blend of old and new in Europe always fascinates me, and this exhibition in Milan was no exception. Set in a historic palazzo, the minimalist installation had a mirror-black floor reflecting the ornate ceiling above. A clever play on past meeting present.

WHERE BENCHTOPS ARE BORN. A flashback to my trip to Italy, when I went deep into a marble quarry in the Carrara mountains. Nothing prepares you for the scale. See those tiny 4WDs at the bottom of the frame, dwarfed by walls and ceilings of solid stone? I still think about this place every time I specify a marble benchtop.

VANITY FAIR. A slab of classic Italian Arabescato marble is the star of this bathroom vanity, its bold grey veining playing beautifully with sculptural wall lights.

STONE COCOON. Creamy Calacatta Oro marble runs all the way to the ceiling in this kitchen, wrapping the space in soft natural stone. Chunky floating shelves are cut from the same slab, so the veining flows uninterrupted.
