Architecture Around the World

At first glance, they almost look like they’re about to fall.

But there’s an incredible engineering story behind them.

Yes, they really are leaning.

And many have stood this way for centuries.

The leaning wasn’t part of the original design.

It happened gradually over time.

Amsterdam sits on layers of soft clay and peat rather than solid rock.

That changed everything.

Thousands of wooden piles were driven deep underground to support the city’s foundations.

Great architecture respects the place.

Great engineering makes it stand.

Without engineering and architecture working together…

Amsterdam as we know it wouldn’t exist.
