Not every pool needs to be a rectangle.

Introducing curves can soften a landscape, create a stronger connection with the surrounding gardens, and make a space feel more natural and inviting. The right curve isn’t just about aesthetics, it influences movement, views and how the entire backyard is experienced.

Every line in a landscape should have a purpose.

Design Inspiration | Mallorca 🇪🇸

Travelling always reminds me that good design isn’t about following trends, it’s about responding to place.

Mallorca has an incredible architectural language built around locally sourced limestone, simple material palettes and landscapes designed for a dry Mediterranean climate. Rather than competing with nature, the buildings and gardens feel like they belong to it.

What struck me most was the restraint. Natural stone, corten steel, gravel, olive trees, cypress and drought-tolerant planting combine to create spaces that are calm, timeless and incredibly liveable.

There are plenty of lessons we can bring home to Australia. While our climates aren’t identical, the principles of using honest materials, embracing texture and designing with the environment rather than against it are universal.

Some of my favourite design ideas come from travelling and simply paying attention to how places are built.

What’s one destination that’s inspired your design thinking?

Site visit at our Roseville project. 👷‍♂️

The raised brick planters and sandstone log walls are now in place, giving the garden its first sense of structure and defining the spaces that will soon come to life.

Next up: the pool, timber decks and arbours. Looking forward to seeing this one come together over the coming months.

Hi, I’m Hamish - founder of Outfield Landscape Architecture.

I’m a landscape architect specialising in residential landscape and pool design, helping homeowners, builders and architects create outdoor spaces that feel considered, functional and connected to the home.

My approach is all about balancing practical outcomes with strong design, making sure each space not only looks great but works well for the way it’s used.

Through Outfield, I work across everything from concept design and approvals through to construction, shaping outdoor spaces that are built to be enjoyed for years to come.

I’ll be sharing completed projects, design ideas and behind-the-scenes insights along the way. Thanks for following along.

The beauty is in the details.

Kahvi Limestone crazy paving creating texture, movement and a timeless finish that only natural stone can deliver. Material selection plays just as much of a role in the success of a landscape as the layout itself, and this is one of our favourites.

A great collaboration resulting in a space that’s built to last.

Over the past six months we’ve had the opportunity to work on some incredible properties, each with its own unique challenges, opportunities and character.

Here’s a selection of some of our favourite design concepts. Every project begins with the same goal: creating outdoor spaces that feel considered, functional and seamlessly connected to the home.

While every design is different, they all share the same design philosophy, thoughtful planning, strong architectural relationships and spaces that are made to be lived in.

Which concept is your favourite? We’d love to hear your thoughts!

If you’re planning a new home, renovation or landscape project, we’d love to help bring your vision to life.

Good external, garden and pool lighting does more than just make a home look good, it changes how you use it.

Thoughtful lighting extends your living spaces beyond daylight, improves safety and accessibility, highlights landscape features, and creates atmosphere long after the sun goes down.

A well-designed lighting plan can transform a backyard, making it feel warmer, larger and more inviting, whether it’s for entertaining, relaxing, or simply enjoying the view from inside.

Lighting isn’t just the finishing touch, it’s something we like to consider from the beginning of the design process.

Designing with the land, not against it.
This firepit area at our recent Yowie Bay project was sculpted into an existing sandstone outcrop, the curved random-coursed stone wall echoing the natural rock face behind. Corten steel, decomposed granite, and deep green foliage complete the palette.
Timeless and completely site-specific.
