Our Gillies project in Hampton transformed a californian bungalow into a spacious double storey family home.

One of our favourite features is the the vaulted ceiling above the living area, drawing the eye upward and framing the dramatic fireplace and chimney as a central element within the space.

We loved collaborating with the clients to achieve this wonderful outcome.

The decisions that matter most in a renovation rarely make the mood board.

After four decades of residential work, Andrew has noticed the same quiet choices coming up on almost every project — the ones that feel easy to cut from the budget, and show up every single day for the next thirty years.

From linen storage to lighting, skylights to covered outdoor living — we've put together a practical guide to the building decisions worth fighting for.

As you approach your build or renovation its important to understand that council regulations and guidelines are constantly changing.

This is an unavoidable and frustrating certainty but being well versed in heritage guidelines we can help you navigate the process

The kitchen truly is the centre of every home.

Where meals are made, conversations are had and friends and family meet every day.

This wonderful kitchen in a recent project has a depth of warm and inviting, that everyone is drawn to.

Renovating within a heritage overlay doesn’t mean compromising on contemporary design.

This recent Williamstown renovation preserves the character of the original dwelling while introducing a modern rear addition designed for light, space and connection.

A sculptural curved bulkhead and carefully considered angles capture the changing sunlight throughout the day, bringing warmth and movement to the living spaces.

Working with heritage constraints can create opportunities for better design — not limit it.

If you live in Williamstown, Newport, Altona, Spotswood, or anywhere else in Hobsons Bay with a heritage overlay on your title, you've likely received a council flyer in the last week or two.

It announces a public consultation on the Draft Local Heritage Policy and Design Guidelines — and it's worth reading properly, not filing away.

If you'd like a second opinion on how the draft guidelines might apply to your specific property — before you make a submission, or before you start planning a renovation — that's exactly what a Feasibility Session is for. No cost, no obligation, just a straight answer.

When sites are tight and have limited opportunity for high boundary walls, simple ‘attic’ type construction can be an absolute winner to provide desired ceiling volume.

Our recently finished Williamstown addition showcases how this is done to create a stunning kitchen space.

This week we paid a visit to a slightly more quirky project that we enjoyed working on. It centred around replacing a collection of ramshackled sheds at the rear of the property - with a spacious workshop and studio.

The client has always loved to tinker and the workshop has played a large part of his enjoyment, and continues now in his retirement.

The before and after pics are almost difficult to comprehend. Looking out from the rear of the house the “sheds” were covered in vines and the backyard barely visible. Now our clients have a magnificent workshop for all the storage & hobbies, combined with a studio and floating bay window looking back up to the family home.

This is our first project working with Doyle Built on our Seddon project.

Together we’re breathing new life into this heritage dwelling.

We’ve made the most of the side laneway to create pockets of light and green space on this tight urban site.

Getting quotes before you have drawings is one of the most common — and costly — mistakes we see.

Builders can only price what they can see. Without a design, you're getting a guess. And guesses have a habit of blowing out.

If you're at the early stages of a renovation or extension, this is worth knowing before you pick up the phone.
