Plant nutrition

Just like all animals, plants also need nutrition at different stages of their life cycles. So before you swear by Epson salt (magnesium sulphate)🫣 🙆🏻‍♀️ give yourself time to learn and understand plant nutrition and its purpose to plant health. Plant nutrition is divided into 2 groups

1 . Macro elements - Macro means large or primary or imperative nutrients that are required for plant development, growth and health. Without these, plant survival is slim. Almost similar in context to proteins and vitamins in animals.

These are the most vital components of fertilizers. Simply referred to as NPK;

☘️Nitrogen(N) - for building leaves or vegetative growth and chlorophyll (the green part of a plant). We all know that without leaves a plant can’t produce flower, fruit, seeds. Nitrogen also builds the plants DNA 🧬 - this simply refers to the make up of a plant and what differentiates each plant

🧪 Phosphorus (P) - important for root development. At young/seedling stage this is an essential nutrient to give the plant energy to anchor itself in the ground and be able to transfer nutrients from the soil to the plant

🍌 Potassium (K) - required for the plant’s survival, its the plant’s defense system, almost like white blood cells in humans. Applied additionally at fruiting stage it will promote the taste of fruits.

2. Micro elements
Micro means small or secondary nutrients that are necessary for plant health. They vary from calcium, magnesium, sulphur, etc. Calcium for example is responsible in breaking down the nutrients to be able to be taken up by the plant, and to improve flowering, thereby fruits.

All of these nutrients are needed to avoid stunted growth, sick plants and poor yields.

Unfortunately organic fertilizers don’t usually breakdown the NPK. However knowing the make up of the compost, manure, etc helps in determining nutrient value. Eg
Nitrogen-Comfrey is very rich in nitrogen, alfalfa, Lucerne, etc
Phosphorus -seaweed or kelp liquid fertilizers, kraal manure, wood ash, etc
Potassium-banana peels, potato peels, bean leaves, wood ash, etc
Calcium- bonemeal, egg shells, etc
Magnesium- epson salt, compost, lime, etc

Plants are expensive so let’s feed them well🙏

Ever heard of the expression ‘Digging for Dopamine’ or ‘Dirt and Dopamine’
Our gardens should ignite a feel good sensation when we look or relax in them. They should heal and relieve stress…not create long lived regrettable experiences, no matter how small

Often wondered why you put so many plants in your garden but it still remains uninteresting 🤔
You go to your neighbors garden and don’t want to go back to yours?
It’s not about space, or maintenance…it’s about design, plant/flower selection and structure!

🌸Garden design
Everyone has a design in mind. Forget what someone else’s garden has or looks like. Ask yourself what would look good in your space, what can you manage. Design it in your head or on paper. Could be that you like;

🖍️ limiting color palette - if you dislike randomness and chaos, choosing a uniform or limited color palette may just be your style. Maybe you only like green or specific colors…or want to repeat same colors in one area…blues together, pinks and whites together, etc
🖍️ repetition - you can repeat the same pattern across the garden. I like roses so I somewhat get biased towards them and play with these around each seedbed. You may like durantas, petunias, etc
🖍️ paths - you may prefer linear lines to meandering paths. I combine both depending on where the focal point is
🖍️ focal points - create a visible focal point in your garden. It may be an erected structure or part of your building…a tree, pond, water feature, garden ornament or garden bench. I prefer a tall or imposing structures so that they can be seen
🖍️ seating space - create a spot where you can sit, relax and admire your garden, have a drink and entertain. You could do this by painting your benches or place colorful pots around your seating area. There’s nothing as frustrating as having nowhere to sit in your garden 😢

🌸Plant/flower choice
Consider the following when you select plants;

🖍️Seasonality - create interest through out the year. Remember some plants are;
…hardy/evergreen (don’t mind frost/cold)
…drought tolerant (can withstand thirst)
…annuals (die after seeding)
…perennials (always come back after season)
Always consider length of blossom time
🖍️Layering - place different plant heights accordingly.
…tall plants are good as backdrops,
…shrubs are for mid layer and
…border/edging plants are your ground covers, which grow low or carpet the ground. Edging plants can be used to define a seedbed border, just like a hedge, but lower. They can be used instead of hardscapes such as paving/bricks
🖍️mass planting - group a number of same plants together in one space
🖍️foliage appeal - plants with textured foliage or leaf 🍁 can make the garden interesting. There’s a lot of variegated (two-tone colored) plants to choose from as well

🌸Structure
Some structures maybe already placed, ie rock outcrops, house, walls, etc. But some can be brought in, erected or planted
🖍️Hardscapes - stones, wood, wheelbarrows or rustic tools 🪏fences, benches, etc add to garden appeal
🖍️hedges can be clipped in a topiary or sculpted shape to showcase garden mastery

Gardening is art..🖼️
Sometimes it’s a given, other times you have to think about it. But whatever it is, it’s not a mistake but an experience😊

Happy gardening 👩‍🌾 💐

When I’m in my garden I have all sorts of feelings…yes I do…🙆🏻‍♀️

🎯I’m reminded of the sweat I perspired to plan, prepare, plant and maintain the spot I stand on
🎯 I remember the failures😢that perfected and still mould me to get to where I want to be
🎯 I think of the anticipatory moments that kept me awake at night after I’ve thrown a seed in the soil 🙃
🎯 I recollect the insane moments when I speak to my plants, asking them not to disrespect my efforts at keeping them alive😁
🎯 I’m reminded of the silly moments when I tried to convince my family how I NEED🫣 a particular plant
🎯 I’m reminded of the times when I chased bugs🪲out of my garden…squashing the hell out of them even when I was squeamish🤮
🎯 I acknowledge and appreciate the learnings from nature because it’s consistent and yet a living canvas that changes whenever
🎯 I’m reminded of the connected conversations over an admiration of nature’s beauty with family, friends and fellow gardeners while visiting my space
🎯 I think of how much I’ve grown in this space, a piece of land I call home 🏡
🎯 I think of how my space calms, heals and gives me renewed hope constantly

So when you see me plant 🌱 more plants don’t ask why …just know that I grow through what I go through 😂

Would you agree this is you too?

Let’s face it, we all want to achieve something from a garden. Most of the times that may change as you learn along the way…but surely we can agree it starts somewhere

What is your type of garden? Have you ever thought about your
🎯 preference?
🎯 available land space?
🎯 intended function?
Or you just go with the vibe🤔😁

What is your vibe? Neat? calm? wild?
Whatever it is that’s been mapped out in your mind, will guide you to your garden style.

🏡 formal garden - if you’re looking for calmness, neatness…this is for you. This type of garden is very structured, has clean lines, geometric shapes, neatly clipped hedges, lawn, etc… so be ready for maintenance…and rigidity because if you change taste it can be difficult/costly to restructure. Though elegant, it usually is very green with very little color. Not particularly wildlife or pollinator friendly either. To get year round interest - plant seasonally flowering evergreens
🏡 cottage garden - is on the wild side😊 Anything goes…flowers, veges, herbs, fruit trees. This is truly a functional garden, biodiversity is at its best here! You’ll get buzzes 🐝 and cooes 🐥in this type of garden. This is a good garden for beekeepers and orchard trees
🏡contemporary garden - very zen🧘‍♀️, tranquil …uses stone and water features a lot
🏡 container garden - ideal for small spaces, balconies, etc. One has to be artistic in arranging what to grow in pots, positioning and pot aesthetics. This can be quite expensive to buy the pots and the water bill, as need frequent watering
🏡 dry garden - sometimes your landscape may be very rocky and dry and this could be the only garden you can keep. Plant cacti 🌵and use drought tolerant plants such as lavender, rosemary, succulents etc. Very low maintenance this one..pollinator friendly too!
🏡 kitchen garden - we call it backyard garden here🤭 because we never want it in the front! However if structured well it can fit anywhere in the yard.

So what’s your style?

Let’s take a break from roses for awhile…

Let’s engage on a….👇

A gardening journey

Before you have an interest in a garden, you’d have seen or been to gardens of some sort, maybe even grown up taking care of one…

I didn’t grow up in a yard that had a garden, not even a small Vege patch….never even thought I would be interested in gardening😁
Very few of my neighbors had gardens. To tell you the truth I didn’t envy their children, my mates, running around with buckets full of water in the scorching Francistown heat! It was too much! I often wondered about their water bill as well🤔

I guess a lot of us can relate😁
Yet somehow during COVID-19, a lot went wrong and the human being devised a coping mechanism to manage stress, depression, anxiety, a loss or just something to do during lockdown. Thankfully 😅 this survival mode brought us to connect with nature🌿

My gardening journey started much earlier than that. I have always admired South African gardens and the variety of flora they have. However, the trigger was my visit to Kew Gardens , Hampton Court and Wisley Gardens in England. I made a promise to myself that one day I will have something green in my space. Not only that, but the inclination to introduce new and unique plants we never had in Botswana grew stronger….something different from what we saw in our municipal parks back in the days.

I started growing in pots as I was staying in a rented house. Some plantings failed and some succeeded. I never gave up when I experienced failures, I graduated to propagation to increase my plant population. We bought a farm in the vicinity of Gaborone surroundings. My husband and I debushed the farm and started planting then landscaping, then maintenance….a gardening hobby became a small nursery business. We left the city and we are now farm dwellers utilizing our land as much as we can and however we want.

If you have to start gardening wherever you are, this is how to…

🔸Pick a spot carefully - you want a spot where your plants can get good sunlight for at least 6hours.
If the available spot is;
🎯east facing then you have a good spot as your plants will get the morning sun but ensure to provide a good shade during the mid afternoon harsh sun. Plant trees on the north side
🎯north facing - your spot will be very hot. Plant trees along the border or edge of your garden space. However, measure the distance of the trees to your garden spot to ensure maximum shade in the afternoon. Always inquire how a tree grows before you plant to avoid aggressive roots from damaging your buildings and garden.
🎯south facing means your garden will be in shade most of the time. If too much shade, prune the lower tree branches to allow dappled sunlight to get through. Alternatively if it’s a hard structure that blocks the light, paint the walls or fences with a white color to allow reflective sunlight in. You can also use white pebbles to capture the light
🎯west facing, you’ll get harsh north sunlight in the mid to late afternoon before the sun sets. Plant trees 🌳 on the north side

🔸 water source - should be near the garden or be accessible without spending too much on a watering system. There’s nothing as frustrating as having to get water far away in scorching heat. Even a few meters can drain you during heat spells!

🔸 select suitable plants - either shade/sun loving depending on your garden placing

🔸 start with easy plants, start small, learn and add more plants as you gain experience

🔸don’t be shy to move plants around or change your landscape. A changing garden gives interest all the time😊

If growing in pots, remember potted plants need to be watered more regularly than the plants on the ground. This is because plants in the ground develop roots that can pull water from ground adequately whilst potted only have access to what’s in the pot. Terracotta pots are porous therefore lose water quicker.

Happy gardening 👨‍🌾
