Last week, we had a wonderful and productive three days at our Shore Up® project, hosted by the Town of Cap-Acadie! Ville régionale de Cap-Acadie

A special thank you to Julie Gaudet for her hard work in preparing for and supporting the event, and to all the volunteers who contributed their time and energy to make this project possible.

Together, we installed wattle fencing, created hügelkultur flower beds, and planted a variety of native species to support shoreline stabilization, biodiversity, and ecological recovery.

Some of the species planted included:
Wild Lowbush Blueberry (Vaccinium angustifolium)
Wintergreen (Gaultheria procumbens)
Virginia Rose (Rosa virginiana)
Calico Aster (Symphyotrichum lateriflorum)
Northern Bayberry (Morella pensylvanica)
Blue-flag Iris (Iris versicolor)
Saltmeadow Cordgrass (Sporobolus pumilus)
New England Aster (Symphyotrichum novae-angliae)
Swamp Milkweed (Asclepias incarnata)

It was a great example of what community collaboration can achieve in restoring and strengthening our natural environments. Thank you to everyone who played a part in bringing this Shore Up® project to life!

What a massive transformation in just six months!

We are the experts in ecological consulting, design, and project installations, working above the high-water mark from the shoreline to the upland edge of our clients’ properties.

These before-and-after photos show a private shoreline restoration project near Pugwash, Nova Scotia, where Helping Nature Heal Inc. has been working to support ecological recovery along a severely eroded bank.

Six months ago, much of the bank was exposed, with extensive soil loss, limited vegetation, and visible root exposure. Today, we’re seeing more vegetation established across the slope, along with the restoration features installed to support the site’s recovery.

We have one more visit planned to prepare the site for winter, making sure everything is secure, tucked in, and protected as much as possible from Nova Scotia’s rapid freeze-thaw cycles.

So, what goes into restoring a shoreline like this?

Building the foundation for recovery with wattle fencing to help slow water movement and trap sediment.

Creating the right growing conditions with hügelkultur beds that incorporate woody material and organic matter to support soil development and plant establishment.

Reintroducing native plant diversity with species selected to suit the site’s conditions and contribute to a functioning shoreline ecosystem.

Working with natural processes to support soil development, vegetation establishment, and long-term ecological resilience.

Shoreline restoration takes planning, the right techniques, and time for natural systems to respond. These photos show just how much work can be accomplished in six months, with more to come as the site continues to develop.

Every property is different, and understanding the land is the first step.

Another day on the shore...but aren't they all!
Today some finishing touches, hay along the chevrons, woven brush, and a last snuggle in of mulch to our plants. Our living shoreline project is almost complete... for now. In November we will apply another coat of hay and brush to prepare our new little plants for their first winter.
For today, a little TLC as they lived through their very first rain and wind storm yesterday.
Here's to Helping this riparian buffer zone Heal up and grow 💪 strong.
