Does the process of sustainably decluttering your home cause you stress and overwhelm? There are so many different places that different types of items go when you choose to let them go. It can be hard to keep track of all of this, and to get rid of everything mindfully.

When you work with me, I try my best to dispose of your decluttered items in a sustainable way. The process is not perfect, but there are systems I use to reduce landfill bound items.

The large majority of decluttered items go into my trunk at the end of the session and head straight to one of a handful of local donation shops or charities that give items away to people for free. But some items come home with me and land in piles in my home or garage where they live until the pile is getting too big, or I’m headed in the area of a specific place that accepts hard to donate/recycle items.

Here is a list of just some of those items:
Electronic recycling
Textile recycling
Pet items
Dead batteries
Writing utensils
Old printer cartridges
Expired medications
Eye glasses
Trophies

Just one of the perks of working with a professional organizer who prioritizes mindful decluttering!

Your clutter threshold is not someone else’s clutter threshold. One person might look at a space and think, “This is perfectly fine.” Someone else might look at that same space and think, “I can’t function like this.” And both can be true.

This client’s home was already relatively low-clutter when we started. There wasn’t a dramatic transformation from chaos to organization. Instead, we made thoughtful changes based on what wasn’t working for them, reducing visual clutter, creating more intentional homes for things, and making the space easier to maintain.

That’s what professional organizing looks like to me. I’m not here to decide how organized your home should be. I’m here to understand your goals, your preferences, and what you want to be different…and then help you get there.

So if you find yourself comparing your home to someone else’s and thinking, “Mine isn’t even that bad” or “I should be able to keep my home like theirs” pause and remember that you don’t need to meet someone else’s standard of organized.

You only need to decide what would make your space work better for you.

Decluttering and organizing are hard enough on their own. Add children to the mix, and the challenge changes.

There are toys that seem to multiply overnight, clothes that no longer fit, school papers, sports gear, snacks, crafts, and all the other things that come with caring for a family.

And when you’re already managing a long list of daily responsibilities, finding the time, energy, and motivation to tackle the clutter can feel overwhelming.

That’s why I’m looking forward to speaking at Burlington Public Library Burlington Public Library about decluttering and organizing with ease when you’re raising children.

We’ll look at some of the practical and psychological barriers that can make this process harder, strategies for planning a realistic and sustainable approach to decluttering and organizing, and how you can instill organizing skills in the children you care for.

Sometimes the hardest part of getting organized is figuring out where to start.

A whole room, basement, office, or entire house project can feel like too much to tackle all at once. My job is to help break it down into smaller, manageable pieces so you can make progress without having to figure it all out yourself.

One space at a time…one step at a time.

That’s the idea behind One Space at a Time Professional Organizing.

The goal isn’t to do it all at once. It’s to make the next step feel doable.

With the transition to back-to-school coming next week, there are a few organizational systems I’ve been making sure are well set up in my home to make this year run smoothly.

1 Paper Management System

Despite so much being digital these days, we still get lots of paper coming into our home. So that paper doesn’t end up all over the house, we have 4 inboxes, one for each member of the family. Any paper that we bring in goes into the inbox for that person. Mail, paper from school, community event flyers, artwork, etc. It all goes in this one area so we can find any paper we are looking for. Name labels are highly recommended if this is a new system you’re considering setting up.

2 Homework Station

Since we don’t want our kids cooped up in their rooms all the time, we set up a homework/craft desk on the main floor that the kids can use. I’ll be honest that while it looks clear in the photo, the surface does NOT stay clear for long. They’ve usually got a couple of active things on the go that stay out. But, during the school year, we have a weekly desk tidy-up scheduled so that things don’t get too out of hand.

3 Shared Digital Calendar

A shared digital calendar works best in our family, and is an absolute must to keep sane! If you haven’t yet set up your calendar in preparation for the school year, this is your reminder to do so this week. Head to your school board’s website and look at the school year calendar. Put all important dates into your calendar (first and last day of school, PA days, exam periods, holiday breaks, etc.). If your kids have extracurricular activities, put those in now so everyone is in the loop. Kids birthday parties…add them in. Kids doctor’s appointments…add them in. The more details you add the better! Include locations, who’s bringing them/picking them up, what needs to go with them, etc.

What is your most needed back-to-school organizational system to make this year smoother than last year?

SAY NO! I recognize it sounds simple but I also know it’s hard to do. My years of experience, first as a mental health professional, and now as a professional organizer, have taught me that when people say yes to everything, their lives become immediately more cluttered, more stressful, and more overwhelming.

Many of my clients struggle with clutter and disorganization not solely due to having too much stuff, but because their lives are so overfilled that they have not left any time to manage the basics of their daily lives, nevermind having time for rest or enjoyable activities.

I wish I could say that maintaining an organized home took no time or effort at all, but I’d be lying. It takes some time to put items away where they belong, it takes time to sort through the papers that enter your door, it takes time to return the item that didn’t fit, and it takes time to put away the holiday decorations. When we don’t make time in our lives to maintain our environment, our lives can turn into chaos and overwhelm.

Having a low clutter and organized home makes this maintenance so much quicker and easier…but it still requires some time.

So if your life is feeling chaotic and cluttered, the first thing I’d encourage you to do is say “NO”. This month’s newsletter is all about saying no. You can sign up at my website if you need some more encouragement.

Maybe the person you feel needs to declutter and organize isn’t you!! Maybe your aging parent’s home is cluttered with decades worth of stuff. Maybe your uncle’s health is declining and you’re worried about how he’ll manage in his home. Maybe your mom recently retired and you’re hoping she won’t leave all of her stuff for you to deal with after she’s gone.

If you’ve been avoiding bringing it up with an aging loved one, or you’ve tried unsuccessfully to talk to them about decluttering and organizing their home, this month’s email newsletter is for you. It’s all about how to effectively broach the subject and talk to them about decluttering, as well as general guidance for things to consider for decluttering later in life.

Head to my website to join the newsletter so you won’t miss this month’s tips. Or, you can head straight to this link to join:
