Fall is a great time to get things in the ground! Plants are devoting less energy to photosynthesis and more to their roots during the fall months so they have an opportunity to get those roots established before next growing season. Thanks to the Fern Woodruff and EcoLogic Horticulture for the opportunity to test out an eco patch of ready to mingle native plants! Stay tuned next spring to see how they grow!

Great day to be outside and doing a bit of work in the garden. Even better to share the yard with this partially leucistic robin! Leucism can be genetic or developmental and results in a loss of pigment for the animal. This is the first time I’ve seen this beauty in the yard but there’s lots of food, fresh water and shelter if they want to stick around a while ❤️

What a great opportunity to get plants already established in soil and ready to go!

Happy 🕊️🐧🦅 fall edition! There may be snow in the forecast but that doesn’t mean birds aren’t still on the move! Many species like red crossbills and mountain chickadees choose Calgary as their overwintering grounds after nesting elsewhere, others are just moving through like many of our boreal breeding warblers. American robins and saw whet owls are a couple of curiosities though! Robins historically would have moved further south for the winter but as climate change and the urban heat island effect increase, many are choosing to tough it out right here feasting on berries and insects and even fish at the edges of unfrozen water . Northern saw whet owls are even more curious, there seems to be little method to their madness. Adult males tend to stick close to their breeding territory while adult females and young of the year tend to go further with some going to the southern US. Their route is anything but consistent though. Some go south then east, some east then south and some a nice straight diagonal line. Or something else in between. The biggest threats to these itty bitty owls are larger owls, light pollution, vehicles, windows and pesticides. Help keep our avian friends safe this fall no matter where their journey is taking them by turning off unnecessary lights at night, resisting the urge to use pesticides and marking those windows!

The other week my daughter came home and told me they were doing a native plant project at school. They each had to write about one plant before they were going to plant them on the school grounds. Despite my offering to help, she had it all handled without me and ended up covering 3 plants instead of 1! I can’t wait to see their garden grow ❤️
