Meet Sofía, owner and lead designer of In Color Studio in Calgary. With a Bachelor of Industrial Design and 20 years of experience in kitchen, bathroom, and interior design, including more than a decade of residential and commercial design work in Canada, she knows that no two people experience a space in quite the same way. That’s what she loves most about her work: getting to know the people behind each project and creating spaces that feel personal, support the way they live, and offer a sense of comfort and belonging from the moment they walk through the door.

Outside the studio, Sofía is happiest paddling an Alberta lake, hiking in the Rockies with her family and her frenchie Mocca.

He holds a bachelor’s degree in Architecture (Ven) and has more than 20 years of experience in construction and project management, including over a decade in Canada. Antonio leads the building side of each project, coordinating skilled trades and turning thoughtful plans into well-crafted spaces. Working alongside his wife, Sofía Ball, Antonio brings design and construction together from the first conversation through the final details.

Outside work, Antonio enjoys playing the drums and working out.

Meet Ellis, Assistant Interior Designer for In Color Studio! Ellis considers architecture and design to be first and foremost about user experience — she appreciates the joy that comes from someone feeling comfortable in their new, more functional space. Ellis sees it as a designer’s responsibility to put forward thoughtful, useful, and impressive works that bring people together and solve problems! She is always inspired by both the natural and built environment around her and enjoys contributing to that same sense of wonder in others.

Ellis’ background in plant sciences, costuming and behind-the-scenes access to theme park design means she has a wide range of experience to incorporate into projects in fun and interesting ways!

Welcome to In Color Studio!

In Color Studio is the design team within a Calgary design and build company founded by Sofia Ball and Antonio Contreras. Last week we added the finishing touches to these bright and airy washroom renovations — the downstairs powder room has a touch of whimsy with the bird and butterfly wallpaper our clients loved!

It’s always exciting to wrap a project and we appreciate being welcomed into homes to help make renovation plans a reality. If you are looking for a team to make your own renovation a reality, reach out to In Color Studio — we’d be happy to help!

More on this recent renovation and others coming soon 💐🎊

Last week at Design Week Calgary, I had the opportunity to attend The Work Beneath the Work, a workshop led by Elisabet from Designfulness™ — and it was such a meaningful reminder that some of the most important work we do isn’t always the work people see.

As designers, entrepreneurs, and creative professionals, it’s so easy to operate on autopilot moving from deadline to deadline, solving problems, managing expectations, and constantly producing.

Elisabet introduced us to a different way of working: shifting away from stress, misalignment, and performative productivity and toward psychological safety, clearer communication, stronger team identity, and sustainable collaboration.

Because real creativity and innovation don’t just come from working harder. They come from creating the right conditions for people to think, communicate, challenge ideas, and collaborate well.

A beautiful workshop and a great reminder to pay attention to the work beneath the work. 🤍

Thank you Designfulness™ and Design Week Calgary for creating space for these conversations.

Last week we were lucky to attend the sold out Dinner with A Designer event hosted by Way of Normal at their Kensington studio as a part of Design Week Calgary. It was a great opportunity to spend time with the design community, make connections, and take a peek into the world of hospitality design.

Way of Normal is doing some very interesting things in food and beverage design — hearing how they approach the design process was an inspiring reminder to push boundaries and think outside-of-the-box! There are so many different ways to approach a design concept and keeping an open mind leads to impressive results, as seen in both Stable Palms Club and Pali Room.

Design Week Calgary had many events to enjoy, we’ll be sharing more of our experiences soon!

Round two at Julian Tile!

Another of our trusted partners, Julian Tile brought out the cutest little cows!

Sherwin Williams also had a great booth — we had fun brainstorming what kind of projects we’d use their “Loneliest Colour” Offbeat Green in. Curious for more suggestions, so leave them in the comments if you have an idea!
