A Bangladeshi chef meets a Palestinian chef in Calgary, and of course, we are talking, eating, and laughing! Husam attends one of my cooking classes this year and last year I attended his monthly community events and today he made fresh za’atar pita for me, and I loved it! Because he started his own food business, I wanted to share his story! What inspired his passion for cooking, why community means so much to us, and all the fun conversations in between.

We both share a love for bringing people together over the food we grew up eating. Through community events where we have served hundreds with those familiar flavours. We have found a way to share our roots and build connections, and we couldn't be more proud!

Today, 3 years ago, I shot a random 2 a.m. post in a Facebook group that brought nine women into my kitchen for my first-ever cooking class! No flyer, no fee, no teaching experience, just their curiosity and love for curry!

I thought I was there to teach the basics of curry, but I left with lessons about my own worth, community, and the joy of sharing my culture. Little did I know I would go on to host over 70 more classes. Alhamdulillah for it all.

রাত দুটোয় হঠাৎ একটা ফেসবুক গ্রুপে দেওয়া পোস্ট থেকে নয়জন নারী এসেছিলেন আমার রান্নাঘরে, আমার জীবনের প্রথম রান্নার ক্লাসে! কোনো ফ্লায়ার নেই, কোনো ফি নেই, শেখানোর অভিজ্ঞতাও নেই—শুধু তাঁদের কৌতূহল আর কারির প্রতি ভালোবাসা!

ভেবেছিলাম, আমি তাঁদের কারি রান্নার বেসিক শেখাব। কিন্তু সেদিন নিজেই শিখলাম নিজের মূল্য বুঝতে, একসঙ্গে আসার শক্তি অনুভব করতে আর নিজের সংস্কৃতি ভাগ করে নেওয়ার আনন্দ খুঁজে পেতে। তখন কে জানত, এরপর আমি আরও ৭০টিরও বেশি ক্লাস আয়োজন করব! সবকিছুর জন্য আলহামদুলিল্লাহ।

Calgary, this one’s for the curious eaters!

On October 27, I am bringing some unique Bangladeshi homestyle recipes I grew up eating to the table! We didn’t wait for Halloween to enjoy these dishes, but I thought spooky season was the perfect time to introduce them to you! 🤣

On the menu:
Chicken liver
Cow brain
Beef paya (trotters)
Dal, shobji (vegetables), and bhorta

It’s Tasmina | Holistic Nutrition Chef birthday today, and you know Shuraya couldn’t let it pass without a little celebration on her page!

From the same roots in Sylhet, Bangladesh and with our Canadian upbringing, we truly share the same love for cooking and feeding people, how lucky am I to have found a soul sister in you? Thank you for bringing your laughter, kindness, and knowledge into my classes, supporting my dreams, and showing up for me. In a city where I had no family, you became my sister. 🥹

Wearing my dad’s smile proudly. Many have told me how they can feel my dad's energy in me and I couldn't feel more at peace. Sometimes I catch a little glimpse of him in my own face, and for a moment, he feels close again.

I miss you, Abba. Your smile lives on in mine, and I hope your kindness lives on in the way I make others feel.

বিয়ের অনুষ্ঠানের মতো রান্নার ক্লাস! সেদিন কারও বিয়ে না হলেও, যখন দেখলাম ৪টি couples আমার ক্লাসের জন্য নাম লিখিয়েছে, তখন ভাবলাম সাগরানা তৈরির জন্য এটাই সেরা দিন হবে!

I hosted my first online Bangladeshi cooking class today, then headed to my rewarding part-time job at Lemon & Ladle where I get to serve our community! From teaching to serving! And today’s hot feature is butter chicken, made with organic, free-range chicken from a local farm!

So grateful for this life, the food I get to share, and the people I get to connect with. 🥹

My first ever online cooking class introducing simple nutritious Bangladeshi recipes! Almost 30 people registered and I am super excited to teach! This is also a learning opportunity so I am grateful for Women's Centre of Calgary for giving me a chance to talk about our Bangladeshi flavors and the fun of cooking!

I miss hosting from my home kitchen! 🥹 And honestly, my cooking classes gave me a reason to share and cook so many delicious food! And looking back at these clips from this year, I realized so many only made it to my stories. I lacked confidence back then, but now they are getting their own series! 🤣 This one is about all the fish that was in our fish curry menu!

Enjoy little teaching moments from my cooking classes that I thankfully got to host 70+ times! There will be talks about food, stories and Bangladeshi ingredients. So drop your questions in the comments, and I will do my best to answer them!

নিজের বাসার রান্নাঘরে সবাইকে নিয়ে রান্নার ক্লাস করার দিনগুলো খুব মিস করি! 🥹 সত্যি বলতে, এই ক্লাসগুলোই আমাকে এত মজার মজার খাবার রান্না করে সবার সঙ্গে ভাগ করে নেওয়ার সুযোগ দিয়েছে! এ বছরের ভিডিওগুলো ফিরে দেখতে গিয়ে বুঝলাম, অনেকগুলো শুধু স্টোরিতেই দিয়েছিলাম। তখন আত্মবিশ্বাসের একটু অভাব ছিল, কিন্তু এখন সেগুলো নিয়েই শুরু হচ্ছে একটা সিরিজ! 🤣 এই পর্বে কথা বলছি আমাদের ফিশ কারি ক্লাসের মেনুতে থাকা বিভিন্ন মাছ নিয়ে!

সৌভাগ্যক্রমে ৭০টিরও বেশি রান্নার ক্লাস আয়োজন করতে পেরেছি—সেখান থেকে শেখানোর ছোট ছোট মুহূর্তগুলো আপনাদের সঙ্গে ভাগ করে নেব! থাকবে খাবার নিয়ে আড্ডা, গল্প আর বাংলাদেশি রান্নার নানা উপকরণের কথা। তাই কমেন্টে আপনাদের প্রশ্ন লিখুন, আমি যথাসাধ্য উত্তর দেওয়ার চেষ্টা করব! ❤️

Four months later, I am finally putting these Eid memories together, missing my amma and my family in Toronto. 🥹

As diaspora kids, we long for moments that feel like home. My cooking classes are my way of recreating that feeling, and I am so grateful to share something this special. Every celebration comes alive through the people we share it with. And what better than with food you grew up eating with?!

So what'a your little moment that brings you back home?

চার মাস পর অবশেষে ঈদের এই স্মৃতিগুলো একসঙ্গে সাজাচ্ছি। টরন্টোতে থাকা আমার আম্মা আর পরিবারের সবাইকে খুব মনে পড়ছে। 🥹

আমরা যারা প্রবাসে বড় হয়েছি, এমন কিছু মুহূর্তের জন্য মন কেমন করে, যেখানে ঘরের সেই আপন অনুভূতিটা ফিরে পাই। আমার রান্নার ক্লাসগুলো সেই অনুভূতি ফিরিয়ে আনারই ছোট্ট চেষ্টা। এমন বিশেষ কিছু আপনাদের সঙ্গে ভাগ করে নিতে পেরে আমি সত্যিই কৃতজ্ঞ।

আপনজনদের সঙ্গে মিলেই তো প্রতিটা উৎসব প্রাণ পায়। আর ছোটবেলা থেকে খেয়ে বড় হওয়া খাবার দিয়ে একসঙ্গে উদ্‌যাপন করার চেয়ে সুন্দর আর কী হতে পারে?!
