A Staircase Renovation Is More Than Just Changing the Look
We recently completed this full railing renovation, transforming a traditional Red Oak staircase into a cleaner and more contemporary White Oak railing system.
At first glance, the biggest change is obvious: the original yellow-toned Red Oak has been replaced with natural White Oak, carefully selected to coordinate with the homeowner’s new flooring. The result is warmer, quieter and more refined, allowing the wood grain itself to become part of the design.
But this project wasn’t only about changing the colour or updating the style.
We also took the opportunity to improve several details in the original railing design.
White Oak + Black Iron
The original wood spindles were replaced with black iron spindles using a repeating combination of two plain spindles and one decorative oval spindle.
This keeps the railing clean and modern without making it overly simple. The decorative spindle adds just enough detail, while the black iron creates a strong contrast against the natural White Oak.
A Better Handrail Grip at the Newel Post
One detail in the original railing was easy to overlook.
The old gooseneck handrail was positioned extremely close to the newel post. Because there was almost no clearance between them, it was difficult to wrap your hand naturally around the handrail when transitioning through this area.
In the new design, we created approximately 2 inches of clearance between the handrail and the post, providing much better room for a natural, comfortable grip.
It’s a small design change visually, but an important improvement in everyday use.
A Continuous Handrail Through the Landing
The original landing handrail terminated at the wall, while the handrail continuing up the next flight started separately.
We redesigned this area with continuous mitered transitions, allowing the handrail to flow around the landing and continue naturally up the next section of stairs.
The result is visually much cleaner, while also giving the user a more continuous handhold when moving through the staircase.
Small Details Matter
The original large wood handrail brackets were also replaced with simple black metal brackets.
They take up less visual space and coordinate with the new black iron spindles, helping bring the entire staircase together as one consistent design.
This project is a good example of what we believe a railing renovation should be:
Not simply replacing old materials with new ones — but looking carefully at the existing staircase and finding opportunities to improve the design, appearance and everyday usability at the same time.
From traditional Red Oak to natural White Oak.
From wood spindles to a custom black iron combination.
From separated handrails to a cleaner, more continuous design.
Sometimes the biggest difference comes from getting the small details right.
