23 years in business. That’s a lot of homes, a lot of decisions, a few sleepless nights, and more lessons than I can count. 🤎

When I started my interior design business, I had no idea just how much this career would teach me. And surprisingly, some of the biggest lessons have very little to do with design itself.

I’ve learned a lot about people, relationships, trust, running a business, and knowing when to stand my ground.

Would I do it all again? Absolutely. Would I do a few things differently? You bet. 😂

Here are 7 things I’ve learned along the way. Some took me longer to figure out than others!

A fireplace is never just a fireplace. It creates a center point for everything else.

The fireplace can influence almost everything around it - from the furniture layout and sightlines to the scale of the room, millwork, and lighting.

Where the fireplace lives can determine how a sofa sits in the room, how much space is left for circulation, and even how the surrounding walls are designed.

It’s one of those details that needs to be considered early, because once the fireplace is in place, it becomes a major part of the room.

Good fireplace design isn’t just about choosing the right finish or surround. It’s about making sure the entire room works with it.

This kitchen is currently underway, and we are very excited about where it’s headed.

The millwork is coming together beautifully, the details are starting to take shape, and we can finally see the vision becoming reality.

We’re not quite ready to show you the whole thing just yet… but trust us, this one is going to be good.

Styling is one of our favourite parts of the project because it’s when everything finally comes together.

The furniture is in, the lighting is installed, and all of the big decisions have been made. Then comes that final layer: art, books, objects, textiles and the smaller details that make a home feel finished and personal.

And while styling can look effortless when it’s done well, there’s a lot of thought behind it — scale, colour, balance, texture and knowing when to stop.

It’s why we include styling as part of our full-service process. Our clients don’t have to figure out how to finish the room after we leave. We take it right through to the final details.

She used this room every single day. And hated being in it.

Our client knew her home gym needed a complete overhaul, but between work, family and everything else on her plate, redesigning it herself simply wasn’t going to happen.

So, we took it off her plate.

We reworked the space from top to bottom — creating a gym that functions better, feels completely connected to the rest of her home, and most importantly, is somewhere she actually wants to spend time.

Because sometimes the rooms you use the most are the ones that keep getting pushed to the bottom of the list.
