Ever wonder how soil gets screened?

This is how it’s done at Kettle Lake Soil!

First, we use our loader to put material in the hopper of the screener. From there, the material falls into the screen (the large rotating drum) where fine material (the soil) is separated from larger materials (like rocks).

The slow-mo shot shows how the soil exits the side of the screen and collects in metal chute with a conveyor belt at the bottom. The rocks and larger materials exit the screen drum at the back of the machine (this leftover material is called “tailings”).

The conveyor belt brings the soil to the front of the unit and creates a pile of freshly screened Kettle Lake Soil!

Returning to our veggies and herbs after 3 weeks of vacation, hot weather and 4+ inches of rain meant some CRAZY growth! I’ve never had cilantro or dill grow so high (and unfortunately go to seed so early in the season).

At this point the only minor difference I see between the Kettle Lake Soil and fancy potting mix is that the potting mix had a few more weeds after all this time.

Oh, and the price point. KLS is $40 for one yard, while this particular potting mix would be about $168 (they’re sold in 50L bags, so you’d need 15.3 bags to equal one yard).

I’ll continue with updates through the summer…but if the growth is the same, why would you choose the option that’s more than 4 times the price?!

Another load of soil going out to a repeat customer!

We love when we get messages from people saying they bought Kettle Lake Soil last year and it grew plants and grass so well that they need more this year!

We had lovely weather in southern Ontario leading up to this soil experiment update. So the kettle lake soil planters needed to be watered once this week, and the potting mix was watered twice.

And we’re starting to see some growth from day 1 to day 14. Can’t wait to see the progress of all the herbs and vegetables when we get back from our 2+ week trip!

Have you received your Summer 2026 copy of Ecological Farming in Ontario yet?

The EFAO (or Ecological Farmers Association of Ontario) is a membership organization that “supports farmers to build resilient ecological farms and grow a strong knowledge-sharing community”.

This magazine is Ecological Farmers Association of Ontario - EFAO’s quarterly print magazine that features farming techniques, issues affecting ecological farmers, news and updates. And if you take a peek at page 11 you’ll see our new ad!

We’re proud to be an EFAO member and support our ecological farmers across Ontario!

Since it rained all weekend long you’d expect the soil to be wet on Sunday evening.

But the potting mix was not as expected! Our moisture reader was on the lowest end of moist, almost in dry territory.

I think this will mean I’ll have to water that planter more frequently, especially as the hot, dry summer months arrive. But stay tuned to see if I’m proven right!

We know that Kettle Lake Soil retains water well, but does this mean for customers? Well, it means that you’ll probably have to water your plants (or grass) less than if you used different soil. It also means that KLS might not be the ideal soil for arid loving plants, like cacti and succulents!

POV: sending out another truck of organic soil from an ancient glacial lake-bed!

Victoria Day weekend is upon us which means it’s gardening season!

This year we are running a little experiment with our herb planters. One planter is Kettle Lake Soil and one is a potting mix you can pick up at any big box store (which promises to grow plants “twice as big” on the bag - so the pressure is on).

We’ll post updates throughout the summer of our herbs and our little veggie garden so follow along to see how Kettle Lake Soil performs!
