every year there are flowers that earn a permanent place on the list because they quietly save your bacon.

This year, with so much rain, cold weather, and some crops that just never quite got going, I was especially grateful for the flowers that kept producing.

Zinnias brought the colour. Statice kept filling buckets. Rudbeckia bridged seasons. Sunflowers brought smiles. Marigolds were the big surprise hero’s for me! And the dependable supporting cast kept bouquets looking like bouquets.
Here’s to the flowers that showed up when I needed them. 🌸

Cheerful, colourful, productive, and happy to fill a bouquet with personality.
When some of my other crops were struggling, zinnias helped keep the buckets full. They aren’t always the star of the show, and don’t always last long in a vase but they are very good at showing up.

The reliable friend of the flower world.
Lots of colour, useful texture, and excellent staying power. Statice helped fill out bouquets when I needed flowers that could do a little of everything.

One thing this season has taught me: growing flowers and being a farmer florist in Camrose County are two related jobs, but they are definitely not the same job.

The growing part happens months before the wedding. The wedding part involves planning, designing, sourcing, conditioning, hauling, setting up, and keeping approximately 47 things straight in my head at once.

And sometimes the flowers I grew aren’t quite what I need, so I bring in flowers from other growers and suppliers. I want the finished work to be beautiful and to suit the couple, even when the farm doesn’t produce every single stem.

I love that Fresh Hope Flowers has grown into this side of the business. It’s a lot more than putting flowers in a bucket and hoping for the best. (Although, to be fair, there is still some hoping for the best.)

Growing, harvesting, conditioning, sorting, and figuring out what is actually ready when the wedding rolls around.
The flowers have their own schedule and growing flowers in zone 3 can be a challenge.

Designing bouquets, making boutonnieres, building arch pieces , sourcing extra flowers, and somehow keeping track of which flowers belong to which wedding.
A surprising amount of the job involves lists. And buckets. So many buckets!

Deliveries, setup, final adjustments, stepping back to look at everything, and hoping the flowers get to do their job: be part of a day people will remember.
This is the part that makes all those buckets worth it.

A little late to the October to-do list… but in my defence, I’ve been busy doing the things on it. 😂

✅The dahlias are dug, divided and tucked away for winter. ✅The grain harvest is finished (which calls for a deep exhale around here). ✅I’ve been cleaning up garden messes, putting things away, ✅preserving the last of the garden goodness, and ✅meeting with brides who are dreaming about 2027.

I’ve also been doing a little baking and giving home and family some attention again.

There’s still plenty to do, but after a full-on growing season, I’m giving myself a little breathing room before my brain starts dreaming up next year’s gardens.

Five seasons of growing flowers. Fifteen couples celebrated this year. More community events than ever. More rain than I care to remember. And a whole lot of beautiful things in between.

I’m tired, grateful, and already a little curious about what next year might hold. But for now, I’m going to finish putting this season to bed.

What’s on your October to-do list? 🍂

Lois wanted fall colour, lots of texture, and a smaller, more traditional bouquet without one big focal flower. And it all came together so beautifully. 🤎

I love fall weddings. The colours, the textures, the way everything feels a little more grounded and rich.

With it being Thanksgiving weekend, I’ve been thinking about what an incredible season this has been, and how thankful I am for all of it.

Thank you for inviting Fresh Hope Flowers into your good days, your hard days, and your very best days. For choosing locally grown and thoughtfully sourced flowers, and for letting me bring a little beauty and hope into your lives.

It’s a privilege I don’t take for granted.

Happy Thanksgiving from our farm to you. 🤎

Maybe a good life isn’t about doing more.

Maybe it’s about noticing what’s already here.

The quiet morning.
The flowers on the table.
The people you love.
The little things that are easy to miss when you’re already thinking about what comes next.

There is so much beauty in the ordinary when we slow down enough to see it.

And I’m learning that noticing it is sometimes enough.

Thanks to Crown Photography & Film for seeing these flowers so beautifully and turning them into art.

2026 was quite the dahlia rollercoaster. 😬

I went into this season feeling pretty confident. I’d learned a lot over the last five years, made some changes, invested in more tubers, and had big plans for all those dahlias in my subscription bouquets and weddings.

And then the rain came. And the cold. And the frost.

More than half my plants were lost, and the ones that survived barely produced anything until September.

This week, I’ll be cutting everything down and digging into the tubers, hoping I have enough to store and try again next year.

Not every season goes as planned. And sometimes, even when you do everything you think you should, the weather has other ideas.

Here’s to a great dahlia year in 2027. 🙏🏻🤞

White on white on white. 🤍

This beautiful July wedding was such a fun one to create for. We had ALL the rain leading up to the day, and the mosquitoes were absolutely relentless 😂 — but somehow, none of that mattered once everything came together.

Creating an entire wedding in shades of white was just so beautiful.

Thank you, Tashina, for sharing these photos from your special day. It was such an honour to be a little part of it. 🤍

If you’re getting married in 2027, I’d love to hear about your vision and chat about how we can bring it to life with flowers grown right here on the farm. There’s an inquiry link in my bio🌿 Kim - Barrhead, Alberta, Canada Wide Photographer Hillside Acres T α ѕ н ι η α R α є ღ
