SCTC crew had the privilege to work on this old Silver maple the other day. Our goal was to selectively reduce or remove epicormic growth.

These vertical response branches have had many years to grow above several old storm failure sites. It was time to slow the growth to help build callus wood at branch junction. Reducing the load and sail on each area pruned will help in the long run.

Lots of character on this old Apple!
Plenty of sun-scald damage in the canopy from previous years of topping.
We did a light thinning of the crown and tip reduction on epicormic growth.
