A household that can help feed itself is still an asset.

So is a neighbour who knows how to grow food. A friend who can teach you to can. Someone down the road who raises meat and is willing to show you how.

I want to know more of those people. And I want to be one of them.

That’s a big part of why I started sharing what we were learning here. I wanted to do more for our family, and I figured other people probably did, too.

Turns out there are quite a few of us ❤️

Today, the Ultimate Yardsteading Collection is officially available. I’ve brought together 47 creators sharing more than 50+ resources to help you grow, raise, preserve, build, and make more at home.

Think about something you’ve been saying you want to learn. The chickens. The garden. The canning equipment you bought but haven’t used yet.

Let’s get you started.

You’ll have a full year with the resources, plus lifetime access to the Yardstead Society community, where we can share how it’s going and help each other along.

This collection is only available now through November 1!

Comment COLLECTION and I’ll send you the link.

Something I’ve noticed over the last few years of sharing here is how many people want to learn this stuff.

People want to know how to grow their own food, raise chickens, fill their pantry, and be more skilled overall. They want to feel more capable of providing for their families. I see it in the questions and messages I get every day.

And I get it. That’s what got me started, too.

But wanting to learn and knowing where to start are two different things. Especially when you didn’t grow up doing any of it.

It can be overwhelming.

So I wanted to make it easier.

I brought together 47 creators and educators to create the Ultimate Yardsteading Collection. People who are actually growing, raising, making, and preserving, sharing their knowledge and experience so you have somewhere to start.

And it’s officially LIVE. 🥳

More than 50 resources worth $1,250, all for just $50. That’s 96% off!

This is a one-time special offer, available for 10 days only, through November 1. Once this collaboration closes, this exact collection won’t be offered again.

Comment COLLECTION and I’ll send you the link.

There’s another part of this that matters a lot to me and I want you to hear about it. Continued in the comments. ↓

My list is long 😂

A few things still on it:

Raise turkeys and pigs.
Make kombucha.
Build a functioning root cellar.

What’s on yours?

Chances are, someone else here already knows how to do it. That was the idea behind the Ultimate Yardsteading Collection: bring those people together and give us all a chance to learn from them.

It opens Thursday, with more than 50 resources covering gardening, preserving, raising animals, building and more.

We talk a lot about wanting better food. Knowing where it comes from. Supporting small farms and having more options close to home.

But keeping those options means buying from the people making them possible.

This is something I want to talk about more here at Hillside Market. Supporting farmers, producers and makers. Buying directly when we can. Getting to know the people growing our food.

I’ve visited markets that were absolutely packed, and others where vendors had beautiful products and hardly anyone shopping.

And it makes me wonder: what makes the difference?

It takes a lot to grow, bake, make, pack and haul everything to a market without knowing how much you’ll bring home again. For producers to keep doing that, it has to be worthwhile.

But we also need to understand what shoppers need.

Do market hours work for people? Is it easy to find out what’s available? Are shoppers looking for everyday groceries, more variety, affordable options?

How do we make buying local a regular part of people’s week?

What would get you shopping at your farmers market more often?

And if you’re a producer, maker or market organizer, what’s working where you are? What needs to change?

I’d love to open this conversation. Because if we want strong local food communities, we need to help make them possible.

Making my own bread started with wanting more say in what we were eating. It was something we bought every week, and I wanted to know how to make it with ingredients I chose myself.

Do I bake every loaf our family eats? Absolutely not. Some weeks I’m on top of it. Other weeks, we need bread and I’m buying it.

But I love having the option. And there’s still something pretty satisfying about pulling a loaf out of the oven that started as flour on your counter.

I’ve included my simple recipe in this post if you want to give it a go. Save it for a day when you have a little time. And if a bread maker is what makes homemade bread happen at your house, use it!

Want to learn sourdough, too? That’s one of the skills you can explore inside the Ultimate Yardsteading Collection, alongside growing food, preserving your harvest, raising animals, and making more of the things you usually buy.

It opens this Thursday, October 22, for just 10 days, with lifetime access to our community included.

The more I learn about how people used to do things, the more I realize how much cool information we’ve forgotten.

Who first looked at milk and thought, “I could paint the barn with that”? Also who figured out rennet?! 😂🤯

So many everyday things involved knowing how to make something, grow something, or use what you already had.

I’d love to see more of that knowledge being passed around again. And I’m happy to be learning alongside you.

In just 4 DAYS, the Ultimate Yardsteading Collection opens!

I’ve teamed up with 47 creators and educators to bring together more than 50 resources on growing, raising, preserving, building, and making more at home.

If this post sent you down a rabbit hole, you’ll want to see what’s inside. 😉

Comment WAITLIST and I’ll send you the link to join before we open on October 22.

I mean….

Younger me would have had some questions about the things I get excited about now. 😂

But that’s how most of this started for me. Something caught my interest, I tried it, and then I wanted to learn a little more.

If your saved folder is also full of things you’d love to try, you might like what I’ve been putting together.

The Ultimate Yardsteading Collection brings together more than 50 resources from 47 creators and educators to help you grow, raise, preserve, build, and make more at home.

It opens October 22. Comment LEARN and I’ll send you the sign-up page so you can take a look and be the first to know when it opens. ✌️

I think a lot of us would pay just about anything for another ordinary morning at Grandma’s house.

Nothing special planned. Just sitting at her kitchen table, listening to her putter around, with nowhere else we needed to be.

Only now, we’d have a few more questions.

How did you make that? When do you plant those? Can you show me before you put it away?

So much of what we’re trying to learn now was just part of their everyday lives. And while we can’t go back, we can still learn and give our own kids and grandkids memories of making things alongside us.

That’s a big part of why I’ve been putting together the Ultimate Yardsteading Collection. There are so many people still practising these skills who are happy to share what they know. I want to learn from them too.

It opens October 22. Comment LEARN and I’ll send you the waitlist link so you’ll hear from me when it’s ready. 🤍

If you had another week at your grandma’s house, what would you ask her to teach you?
