STORM UPDATE, Thursday morning: She has a name now. Subtropical Storm Josephine.
At 5 AM the US National Hurricane Center had Josephine about 765 km SSW of Halifax, with winds near 100 km/h, moving northeast at 20 km/h and speeding up. The good news: the track keeps her centre south of Nova Scotia, and she should turn into a powerful post-tropical low with hurricane-force winds out over the water by early Friday. So we get the fringe, not the full show.
What Environment Canada has for HRM (5 AM forecast, no alerts for Halifax right now):
- Today: periods of rain, 10 to 20 mm, risk of a thundershower this afternoon, NE gusts to 40 km/h, high 11
- Tonight: rain ending this evening, 2 to 4 mm more, NE gusts to 50 km/h
- Friday: north wind 40 gusting to 60 km/h, high 8
- Weekend: sunny, 15 and 16 by Sunday and Monday. Josephine owes us that much.
Big swells from Josephine are already reaching Atlantic Canada. Peggy's Cove rocks are not a lookout today, b'y.
Quick storm checklist:
- Clear leaves off downspouts and storm drains before the rain gets going
- Tie down patio furniture, bins and the trampoline before Friday's wind
- Look up at any big limbs hanging over the house, car or power line
- Check the basement and window wells tonight for water coming in
- Charge your phone in case the lights flicker
If Friday's wind drops a limb, lifts some shingles or peels off a piece of siding, BCL & R can help with cleanup, tarping and repairs. Family run, $2M liability insured. Call or text 902-399-4465.
Question for you: what's the one thing in your yard that ALWAYS ends up in the neighbour's yard after a storm?
