Thanks for sharing, Nature Inspired Teacher , and for the time you spent with us in Bangor. We had so much fun putting together these workshops.

We design natural playgrounds across a wide range of price points. We also plan many of them in phases, with each phase installed as new funding comes in. We also offer fundraising support. In fact, our in-house team works with clients to build fundraising plans alongside the design. Our goal is to create as many playgrounds, big and small, as we can, to ensure kids everywhere have access to nature play.

Teaching other educators what we have learned over 20 years of designing natural playgrounds is the part of our work we value most, and last week our team got to do it in two vastly different places.

In Bangor, Maine, our founder, Adam Bienenstock, and our Director of Training and Education, Jill Bienenstock, presented at the Maine Association for the Education of Young Children Statewide Early Childhood Education Conference, where they explained how outdoor play and learning environments support movement, sensory exploration, problem-solving, and healthy development in young children.

At the same time, our outdoor education team was in Parry Sound, northern Ontario, delivering professional development training for staff at the District of Parry Sound. Through our Stepping Outside workshop, those educators designed outdoor activities that build motor skills, self-regulation, cognitive skills, and attention span.

Did you know that you can book our education team for workshops at your location, wherever you are? Our full range of workshops for educators and school teams, along with our upcoming conferences, is available on our website: https://www.bienenstockplaygrounds.com/education-and-workshops/

Today is Take Me Outside Day. Launched by , it urges educators to spend at least one hour learning outdoors with their students.
Why?
Children’s stress hormones follow a daily rhythm, and research suggests that a school day spent indoors can disrupt it.
Researchers in Heidelberg, Germany, measured cortisol, the body’s main stress hormone, three times a day in a class of 11-year-olds, most of whom spent one full school day each week learning in a forest. Over the school year, the forest group showed the steady drop in cortisol from morning to afternoon that marks a healthy stress response, while the children who stayed indoors did not show that expected decline. The authors concluded that regular outdoor learning had a positive effect on how children respond to stress, which matters because stress in childhood is linked to stress-related illness later in life.
Couldn't all our kids benefit from less stress?

As part of Take Me Outside Week, we want to pay homage to the importance and impact of being outside.
When we look back to our favourite childhood memories, a majority were outside. We didn't need fancy phones or devices. We didn't need supervision or organized games. We climbed trees, jumped over logs, rolled down hills and scaled giant rocks.
Think back to a day when you did any of those things as a child. Wasn't it pure joy? It's the same joy that we want for our kids, and all it takes is a few hours outside. We hope you'll celebrate this week by going outside for a few hours of joy.

Designing a public landscape on what is known as America's mountain has to begin with the soil, the forest and the people who have cared for that land for generations.

At the American Society of Landscape Architects Colorado/Wyoming Awards Celebration, our lead landscape architect, Shane Brown, accepted an award for the Pikes Peak Discovery Landscape Master Plan.

Shane worked closely with Skyler Rorabaugh at City of Colorado Springs, the team at Pikes Peak – America’s Mountain, the U.S. Forest Service, and the Tribal Nations who hold this mountain sacred.

The plan follows the mountain’s ecology and its natural and cultural history, adding biochar to the soil and supporting the recovery of biocrust, the thin living layer that holds high-country soil in place.

Consultation with Tribal representatives and local knowledge shaped the design as much as the science did, which is why the plan is rooted in community from the start.

The result is a regenerative master plan that invites visitors to explore the mountain through play and to understand how closely land and people are connected.

Thank you to every partner who shared this work with us; we are proud to accept this award alongside you:

We center our playgrounds around big body play. What is big body play, you ask? It's the tumbling, climbing, and running most children do from birth to age eight. Children who climb trees and roll down hills are building the strength and self-control they will rely on for the rest of their lives.

Jumping and rolling activate the senses that tell a child where their body is, which builds core strength and balance, and large movements strengthen the brain connections that support focus and early reading.

Children who spend their energy on big-body play during the school day come back indoors calmer and ready to concentrate.

Our natural playgrounds give children the hills, boulders, and open fields this kind of play needs. How much room does your school or centre give children to run and tumble?

The Fay School in Houston is one of our favourite places. A fence used to separate the school from four acres of forest. We helped the school take the fence down and turned that once-unreachable stretch along Buffalo Bayou into an inclusive playscape. There are basket swings that hold several children at once, a water pump sized for small hands, and wide, level paths everyone can use. It's amazing what happens when you remove barriers, both real and perceived, to nature.

World Mental Health Day was this weekend. Did you know that mental health is linked closely to physical activity? Children are spending far less time moving outdoors than their health requires, and the researchers who track their activity have linked that shortfall to poorer mental health.
Children are getting failing grades for overall physical activity, with only less than 50% of five- to 17-year-olds getting the recommended 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity each day. The biggest risk to children's health is keeping them indoors, because children move more, sit less and play longer when they are outside.
Time outdoors gives children room to burn off stress and work through conflicts with friends without an adult stepping in, and both experiences build the confidence and self-regulation children need to cope with hard days. We design natural playgrounds and outdoor classrooms so schools and early childhood centres can give children more of that time during the day, in spaces filled with hills, logs, plants and loose parts.
How much of your child's day is spent outside?

Happy International Walk to School Day. What did your child notice on the way to school this morning?
Children who walk to school arrive having already made dozens of small decisions about where to step, when to cross the street, and how fast to go.
Every one of those decisions builds the judgment and confidence children carry into the rest of their lives. Schools can keep that going after the bell by moving part of the day's learning outdoors, where children keep exploring, testing their limits, and working things out together.
Research links regular outdoor learning with better focus and stronger student well-being, which is why we design outdoor classrooms and learning spaces that teachers can use in every season of the year.
Ask your school how much of the day happens outside, and share this post with a teacher or principal who wants children to spend more of it there.
