Does someone local know how to put this together? It's stunning!
We always know we’re safely ensconced back home in Toronto when a fresh explosion of orchids takes up residence in our kitchen. It’s become something of an annual ritual.
Our usual port of call is the florist strip at Av ’n’ Dav, and more specifically Ken’s, where the same lovely lady works her magic each and every autumn, creating a spectacular arrangement that varies little from year to year. And that’s precisely how we like it.
This year, however, there’s been a slight change of plan. Our truck, you see, is still making its way back from Cape Breton, enjoying a sightseeing tour on a flatbed transporter somewhere between provinces. Unfortunately, it’s also carrying the graphite bowl we sent east at the beginning of this season, with the last surviving blooms from last year’s arrangement. We could, of course, have waited for its return. But where’s the fun in that?
Instead, we found a new brass vessel which was dutifully filled with six glorious Phalaenopsis orchids, a generous scattering of succulents and enough moss to cover a (non)rolling stone. And just like that, our kitchen feels like home again.
As for tonight? Well, we’ve cleared our diary to admire the new arrivals. We'll ogle and primp, whilst surveying their every angle. Hey, there may even be some misting. Wild times, indeed…
