The most durable paint doesn’t always deliver the smoothest finish.

Self-leveling matters, especially when painting trim, doors, and cabinets. The right product depends on your application method, whether you’re brushing, rolling, or spraying.

What matters more to you: durability or a flawless finish?

The right paint can make a big difference in how efficiently a contractor gets the job done.

Features like smooth application, natural flow, and faster recoat times help crews work efficiently, cover more ground, and complete projects on schedule.

Contractors, what paint feature saves you the most time on the job?

Not every painting project needs the most expensive paint.

Choosing the right product comes down to the features you actually need. From reliable everyday options to premium paints with superior durability and washability, the goal is to get the right performance for your project and budget.

How do you decide which paint is right for your home?

The best sale isn’t always the biggest sale, it’s earning a customer for life.

Recommending the right product, respecting the customer’s budget, and prioritising long-term relationships over short-term profit builds trust that keeps people coming back.

Premium labels don’t always mean premium paint.

The product name, sheen, durability, and quality all matter when choosing paint. Don’t let a familiar brand name convince you that you’re getting the right product.

Have you ever been surprised by the difference between two “premium” products?

The cheapest paint choice can cost you more in the long run.

Choosing the right product means better durability, better colour retention, and a finish that lasts for years—not one that needs repainting sooner.

A color match isn’t the same as getting the actual product. Ask questions, verify the paint, and make sure you’re getting what you paid for.

Trying to be a master of all trades is one of the biggest mistakes contractors make. To build a scalable, highly profitable business, you need to narrow your focus.

Here is why specializing in a specific niche will transform your contracting business:

The Flywheel Effect: Focusing on a specific trade, project type, or target client builds operational momentum over time, making your systems faster, smoother, and far more efficient.

Streamlined Profitability: Contractors who specialize—such as B2B painters working exclusively with builders—often generate higher overall profits through sheer efficiency and repeat volume, even at competitive rates.

Easier Team Training: Onboarding and training new crew members is vastly simpler when your team only needs to master a few refined processes instead of dozens of different services.

Fewer Callbacks & Higher Satisfaction: Deep expertise eliminates guesswork, resulting in fewer warranty claims, fewer callbacks, and a stronger market reputation.

Stop trying to serve everyone. Focus on what you do best, dominate your specific niche, and let specialization drive your long-term success.

One of the biggest misleading claims in the flooring industry today is the idea of "waterproof laminate."

Here is why 100% waterproof laminate does not exist and how manufacturers trick customers:

High-Density Fiberboard Cores: Almost all laminate flooring is made with an HDF core—essentially compressed wood fibers and glued sawdust that will absorb moisture and swell over time.

The "Waterproof" Loophole: Companies claim laminate is waterproof based on tight click-lock joinery, not the board itself. If water bypasses the joint, the board will warp, bubble, and lift.

Subfloor Flaws: Water-tight joints rely on a perfectly flat floor. Since real-world subfloors are rarely 100% level, movement causes joints to open, letting water leak right into the core.

Laminate vs. Vinyl: If you truly need 100% waterproof flooring, choose Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP). Unlike laminate, LVP contains zero wood fibers and will never absorb water or swell.

Be extremely cautious when buying laminate advertised as waterproof—the chemistry and wood core simply don't support the claim.

Getting conflicting advice from different employees in the exact same paint store is extremely frustrating—and far too common.

Here is why you get different answers and how to make sure you get the right advice:

Habit Over Science: Many painters and store advisors recommend products they got comfortable with early in their careers (like Ultra Spec 500, Super 2, or ProMar) simply because it's familiar to them, not because it’s the best fit for your job.

Anecdotal vs. Technical Data: Personal experience is valuable, but experience must be backed by technical product specifications. Chemistry doesn't lie, regardless of which store you visit.

Challenge the Recommendation: When given advice, ask why they recommend that specific product. Is their opinion backed by technical data sheet metrics or just personal preference?

True paint experts understand both practical application and paint chemistry—if an advisor can't explain the technical reasoning behind their recommendation, their advice has major holes.
