The maples are beginning to turn and we are eagerly awaiting the rich reds and deep purples and golden yellows that intensify in colour at the temperature drops.

This is a sleeper plant. But every autumn, she turns heads. Euonymus europaeus ‘Red Cap’ (aka Spindle Tree) is a small tree to about 12’, super winter hardy (Zone 4), and unfussy about light conditions (sun, shade, occasional water). She’s a bit plain and green in spring, but her fall colour is a devastating lipstick crimson, with pink fruit that split to reveal orange seeds that songbirds are delighted with all winter. This one is a swan. Plant it in any boring corner behind the now dwindling summer perennials, and it will reward you.

Our good friend Brad over Select Roses always reminds us… “To garden is a verb.”

It’s the doing of creating and caring for your outdoor space. And our best tip is to start by observing. Where is the garden kind of tired today? What’s boring? Finished it’s season? In need of a pick me up? When you look out the kitchen window, does something interest you or make you smile?

Then drop in to your favourite garden shop and look for what’s blooming today, and pepper in something new. A tiny addition can do wonders and keep your interest as the seasons change. Ever a work in progress.

So what’s blooming here today? Japanese Anemones. And this messy corner of my garden makes me smile.

Why is September a great time to plant trees and shrubs? Cool, mild, dampish weather helps to prevent transplant shock and the lack of adequate hydration common to summer plantings. Plus, when trees and shrubs don’t need to dedicate energy to producing brand new leaves and flower buds, they can direct resources to good root development. Remember to still “water in for winter” and plant with bone meal or a great root enhancer like H-Start !
