things that were worth spending more on in our remodel (and where we saved instead)
after renovating our home, I’ve realized that not everything needs to be a splurge. some things are absolutely worth investing in, while others can be beautiful without the big price tag.
where I’d splurge again:
• lighting fixtures — good lighting can completely transform a room. one of those details I would never overlook.
• custom cabinetry — especially when it comes to maximizing storage, integrating appliances, and making every inch functional.
• integrated appliances — not necessarily the appliances themselves, but the cabinetry that makes them disappear. worth every penny for that seamless look.
• window treatments — floor-to-ceiling curtains make such a difference. the right fabric, fullness, and installation are everything (can also look like a splurge without being pricey)
• hardware & living finishes — unlacquered brass, in particular. I love how it ages and develops character over time.
where I think you can save:
• decorative accessories — some of my favorite pieces are affordable finds. a beautiful home doesn’t need expensive styling.
• side tables & occasional furniture — mixing affordable pieces with investment furniture creates a more collected look anyway.
• artwork — vintage finds, prints, and affordable art can be just as beautiful as expensive originals.
• trendy pieces — if you’re tempted to experiment with a trend, do it with something that’s easy and inexpensive to change.
• furniture in every single room — not everything needs to be an investment piece. I’d rather spend on the pieces we use every day.
• decorating everything at once — honestly, one of the best ways to save is simply taking your time. a home feels so much more personal when it’s collected over the years.
but if there’s one thing I’d recommend above everything else, it’s to take your time. you don’t need to finish every room or buy everything at once, let your home evolve with you, collect pieces you truly love, and don’t rush the process just to have it all done
what’s one thing you’d always splurg
