A decluttering story that may help you let go and help others...

If you've ever hesitated to donate something because you just bought it, or it cost too much, or you never got your money's worth out of it — let me tell you about a pair of shoes.

I was a newly single mom with two kids in their young teens. It was back-to-school time and we needed clothes. Not wanted. Needed.

My son wore about a men's size 10 at the time, and I was looking for an 11 so he'd have a little room to grow. We had no money. So we went to the only place I knew to go - Goodwill.

We got to that wall of shoes and it was all old men's dress shoes and flip flops. I could see it on his face. He was heartbroken. And I thought, okay, we'll suck it up and go find something cheap at Kmart.

Then he stopped. He picked up a pair of shoes and said, "These are the ones I want."

They were sitting in the 8½ section. Brand new Nikes. Tags still on.

I said, "Babe, I would love to get those for you, but they're not going to fit."

I grabbed them just to see what they cost.

They were a size 11. Somebody had just put them in the wrong spot.

Friends, that pair of shoes was a miracle. We were heartbroken over a family falling apart, and there was so little I could do for my kids. But because some guy - or more likely his wife or girlfriend - noticed a pair of shoes that had been bought and never worn and decided to let them go, my kid got a miracle exactly when he needed one.

The thing sitting in your closet with the tags still on isn't a monument to your mistake.

It might be somebody else's miracle that they need, right here and now.
