Big changes are underway on this one!

We’re kicking off another exciting project, and this one is getting the full Mitchell Contracting treatment!

Our team is taking on a major main floor remodel, a new addition, AND a full basement renovation. We're talking a brand-new kitchen, two additional bedrooms, all-new windows and doors, updated mechanical systems, and so much more.

Essentially, we're transforming this home from top to bottom!

One of the things we love about projects like this is showing homeowners what's possible when they love where they live but their home no longer meets their needs.

Sometimes, you don't need to move to get the home you've always wanted. With the right planning, the right contractor, and some additional square footage, you can completely reimagine your existing space to better suit your lifestyle.

And that's exactly what we're doing here!

We've got a lot of work ahead of us, and we're excited to take you along as this transformation comes together. Stay tuned for more updates!

Custom Home vs. Renovation — Which One Is Right for You?

There’s a lot to consider when deciding between building a custom home and renovating or remodelling your existing space.

One of the biggest differences? The planning process.

While every renovation requires careful planning, a custom home takes things to another level. From the initial layout and design to structural details, mechanical systems, finishes, and everything in between, there are a lot more decisions to make before construction even begins.

But the trade-off? You get a home that's designed specifically for you. Every space, every detail, and every decision can be tailored to how you want to live.

On the other hand, a renovation or remodel means working with the home you already have. There may be some limitations to consider, but that doesn't mean you can't completely transform how a space looks, feels, and functions.

And sometimes, that's exactly what you need!

At the end of the day, neither option is necessarily better than the other. It's about understanding your goals, your budget, and what makes the most sense for your home and lifestyle.

In this reel, Brendan breaks down some of the key differences between the two!

We’re kicking off the interior tour of this beautiful Port Colborne home, and there are so many details worth highlighting!

Right off the main entrance, you’re welcomed by a tiled entryway complete with heated floors — a practical touch that makes all the difference being on the lake.

From there, the home opens up into the great room, kitchen, and dining area, creating one large, connected living space.

One of our favourite features is the vaulted ceiling, accented by a beautiful douglas fir beam that brings warmth and character to the room. We carried that same natural wood detail into the fireplace mantel, tying the space together.

But the real showstopper? Those windows!

The large windows at the front of the home bring in an incredible amount of natural light, making the entire space feel bright, open, and inviting.

This is just the beginning of our interior tour. Stay tuned as we take you through more of the details that make this home so special!

The finished home might make it look easy, but this property came with one pretty unique challenge.

This home was built on a roughly 35-foot sandhill, which meant getting all of the necessary services to the house took some extra planning.

From utilities to the septic system, the elevation of the property added another layer of complexity to an already major project. It wasn’t as simple as getting everything from point A to point B — we had to work with the property and find solutions that allowed everything to be installed where and how we wanted it.

It took more work to get there, but in the end, we were able to make it all come together the way we had planned — and that was a big win for our team.

It’s one of those parts of a new build you’ll never see in the finished photos, but it plays a huge role in getting to the finished product.

There are a lot of moving pieces behind a major renovation — and managing those pieces is a big part of what a general contractor actually does.

One thing that sets Mitchell Contracting apart is our ability to keep a large portion of the work in-house.

From demolition and framing to finishing work and even tile installation, many stages of our projects are completed and managed directly by our own crew. That means we’re not relying on a different subcontractor for every step of the renovation.

Why does that matter?

It gives us greater control over scheduling, quality and the transition from one stage of the project to the next. Our team understands the full scope of the renovation, knows what’s coming next and can catch potential issues before they affect another part of the project.

Of course, we still work with trusted subtrades for specialized work like electrical, plumbing and other licensed trades — but Brendan and our team remain your main point of contact throughout the entire project.

A general contractor’s job isn’t just to build your renovation. It’s to make sure all of the moving pieces come together properly — and having an experienced in-house crew helps us do exactly that.

Sometimes the placement of an entrance can completely change how a home functions — inside and out.

At our Firelane project, we decided to move the main entrance to the side of the home rather than placing it at the front. This allowed us to dedicate the front elevation to large windows, bringing plenty of natural light into the living and dining areas while taking advantage of the views from inside.

On the exterior, we continued the Craftsman-inspired look with crisp white trim against the Midnight Surf siding. The contrast helps highlight the windows and architectural details while giving the home a clean, classic finish.

It’s a good example of how decisions made for the interior layout can influence the exterior design — and why we plan the home as a whole.

An exterior renovation is about more than choosing new siding or swapping out a few windows.

There are a lot of components that come together on the exterior of a home — windows, doors, siding, roofing, insulation, water management, trim and other finishing details. And when you're planning a larger renovation, those decisions need to work together.

For example, replacing siding now and deciding to change a window or door later could mean removing or reworking finishes you just paid to have installed. Changes to rooflines can impact siding and drainage, while window and door replacements need to be properly integrated into the exterior envelope.

That’s why we always look at the bigger picture.

Even if everything isn’t being changed, understanding the full scope from the beginning allows us to properly sequence the work, plan for how different materials come together and avoid unnecessary rework down the road.

A little more planning at the beginning can make a big difference in how smoothly the renovation comes together — and how cohesive the finished home looks.
