On Saturday, October 10, 2026, The Spaniel's Tale, an independent bookstore in Ottawa's Hintonburg neighborhood, had to move its entire inventory to a bigger space one block down Wellington Street West.

Co-owner Cole Davidson could have packed everything into boxes and rented a truck. Instead, he put out a call for volunteers. The idea had come from the store's own customers, who had shared articles about other bookstores pulling off similar moves.

Around 280 people showed up. Staff organized them into two lines stretching down the sidewalk from the old shop at Carruthers Avenue to the new one at Stirling Avenue, and starting around noon, the books began to flow, hand to hand, one at a time.

The crowd was so big that one intersection had to be blocked off so the chain could reach the front steps of the new location. When volunteers stepped out of line for a break, the others simply shuffled along the chain to close the gap and kept passing.

By about 2:30 p.m., all 7,400 books had made the trip. The new space is more than twice the size of the old one, with room for book signings and more.

"A big help, just in terms of not breaking our backs, for sure," Davidson said.

And the method came with one perk no moving truck could offer. Because the books were passed down the line in sequence, every single one arrived at its new shelf already in alphabetical order.

I finally went back to work today! I had the best vacation and then I had the worst flu.

So happy to spend the day with my client! She had moved a few times and had boxes and boxes of paperwork and miscellaneous items that she needed to go through. The goal is to sort stuff before you move if you can but when you don’t get a chance to do it before you move, you hire me and have a fun day instead!!!
