Meghan Hussey grew up with an autistic sister. She watched her navigate a world that consistently excluded her and built her career around changing that.

In this TED talk she lays out four steps toward a disability-inclusive future, starting with an attitude check on the assumptions and stereotypes most of us carry without realizing it.

Nearly 15 percent of the world’s population lives with a disability. Designing for everyone is not a nice to have. It is critical.

Steve Alexy has lived with cerebral palsy his whole life. His partner Arlyn Smith had a stroke at 23 that left her with permanent damage to the part of her brain that controls balance and movement.

Together they hold national and world powerlifting records.

They compete in standard meets, not just para divisions. And they keep winning.

Their story is not about overcoming disability. It is about two people who found each other, found a sport, and decided to go all in.

On National Seniors Day, older adults at nine sites across seven Canadian provinces got hands-on time with the technology designed to help them stay in their homes longer.

Chris Blodgett, 70, showed up to the AGE-WELL showcase in Charlottetown already thinking ahead. He built his home with wide doorways and a modified shower. He does not want to be a burden on his kids. "It's like a big game," he said.

Staying home longer is not just a preference for most Canadian seniors. Research backs it up as better for health and wellbeing. The technology to make it possible is here. The question is whether people know about it and can access it.

Saskatchewan just invested more than $10 million in workforce development programming to help people with disabilities prepare for, find, and keep meaningful employment.

Over 741,000 Canadians with disabilities have the skills to work but are not currently employed. That is a workforce gap no economy can afford to ignore.

This month, across the country, events and conversations are happening to change that. Disability Employment Awareness Month is not just a proclamation. It is a call to action.

October is Disability Employment Awareness Month across Canada.

More than 741,000 Canadians with disabilities have the skills and potential to work but are not currently employed. That is not a gap in talent. That is a gap in opportunity.

This month, landmarks and businesses across Canada are lighting up in purple and blue to spark conversations about what inclusive hiring actually looks like in practice. Last year more than 900 locations participated.

The theme this year: Skills Grow Economies. Disability Inclusion Fuels the Growth.

Brain tumour patients in the UK used to wait up to eight weeks to find out what type of tumour they had. That wait is now two hours.

The NHS just started piloting a genomic test that analyzes a tumour's genetic code while the patient is still on the operating table. Surgeons can get the result mid-surgery and adjust their approach in real time. Patients start the right treatment faster. Weeks of anxiety reduced to hours.

Steve Palmer, 55, from Nottingham, was one of the first to benefit. "Getting that quick diagnosis removed weeks of anxiety," he said.

Brain tumours are the leading cause of death in children and adults under 40 in the UK. This is a big deal.

30 Paralympic medals. 19 golds. Nine Paralympic Games.

Dame Sarah Storey is Britain's most successful Paralympian of all time. Born without a functioning left hand, she has spent the past three decades redefining what is possible in elite sport.

This month she stepped off the podium and onto the Strictly Come Dancing dancefloor.

She says she is excited by the challenge of being a beginner again. Her family never framed her arm difference as something that should stop her living fully, and you can see that in everything she does.

One of the most remarkable athletes of her generation, trying something completely new. Worth following.

Stewart Lamb Cromar spent over a decade submitting designs to Lego. Then he lost much of his sight after a detached retina in 2020.

He kept going anyway.

In 2026, his model, Highland Hike, featuring a Highland cow named Flora inspired by childhood family holidays in Scotland, won a public vote through Lego Ideas and became an official Lego set.

"I never thought this would be possible. After all the setbacks, surgeries and difficult times, to see Flora become a real Lego set is incredible."

He now builds tactile models for people with visual impairments and hands out Braille Lego bricks at exhibitions. Visual impairment does not have to stop you achieving your goals. This story is proof.

Autism affects millions of families and no two experiences are the same. Yet for decades the diagnostic and care model has treated it as if they were.

A major new research initiative called SPECTRA launched this week in the United States with one goal: change that. Using AI, genetic data, and real-world outcomes, it aims to speed up diagnosis, understand why autism presents so differently from person to person, and match individuals to care that actually fits their specific needs.

"Autism is not one-size-fits-all, and our science and care cannot be either."
