Project Process

Inner workings of a project coming together. Tile layouts onsite, pin ups of what’s to come and 3D visuals to help us get there. This is what months of design work looks like before the final product.

The ultimate source of inspiration.

These images were captured by Andrea on her recent travels; Mexico, Scotland and Pender Island.

For Andrea, her passion for design flourished in childhood, where she could be found “redecorating” her room with furniture and distinct colour combinations. Specifically pink and green. It was the 90s. Her palette has since evolved. She is an artist at heart, drawing on her love of painting, pottery, and her BC West Coast roots to create a strong contextual story that forms the backbone of her interior design projects.

Some items that caught the eye of AJS at IDS Vancouver 2026.

This year, we saw a lot of bold colour, a strong callout to handmade pieces with real materials, and a retro play on common objects.

An honest note from your interior designer. Things I actually don’t care about:

Your mess. We’ve seen every version of “not working.” Yours isn’t worse than the last one, and the fact that your home isn’t functioning for you is exactly why we’re here. Don’t clean for us.

Softening your feedback. Tell us what you really think about our design options. Holding back to protect our feelings is the slowest path to a room you’ll love. We put dozens of ideas forward that never make it to the final cut.

How long you take to decide. Renovating is a big financial call. We never want you making it on the spot. Take the week. Take two. Confidence takes time.

Come as you are, tell us the truth, take your time. That’s how good rooms are made.

Designed to carry the project’s palette into its smallest rooms.

The Arbutus Ridge bathrooms were planned to feel as considered as the rest of the home, with a colour story that doesn’t dilute with a smaller footprint. Material choices honour the project’s design language: white oak vanities tie back to the home’s millwork, brushed nickel fixtures continue the project’s metal vocabulary, and the burgundy palette shows up two ways, full-coverage on the powder room walls and grounded underfoot on the main bath’s deep oxblood tile floor.

We approached AJS’s new identity the same way we approach a client’s home: not to appeal to the widest possible audience, but built around the specific work we do, the people we do it for, and the belief that good design connects the two. In our own language, it’s form and function with a little bit of play. You could even say it’s purposely built.

The full story behind our rebrand is at the link in our bio.

Some rooms are built around a sofa. Some are built around a view. Arbutus Ridge was built around a Sheila Kernan.

The piece came from Bau-xi Gallery here in Vancouver, and it set the entire palette for the project. The blue in her canvas became the dining room chairs. The burgundy became the fireplace. The room is, in a way, the painting’s home.

A designer’s summer is 90% palette research disguised as leisure.

1. Stone. A material I came to late and now can’t stop specifying. Different stones for different rooms and different clients (some can accept the scratch; some can’t). Expect bolder statement stone in our upcoming work, from mantles to backsplashes.
2. Vancouver Fauna. Our garden is full of different shapes, sizes, and colours growing together, and I get so much joy watching them come to life. We’re used to seeing that kind of colour outside. Indoors, the reaction is often to recoil. A constant challenge to re-invent.
3. Travel. Pender Island and Nelson this summer, both giving me new palettes and textures I’ll be pulling from all year. Time away from the desk is the fastest way back to it.
4. My Kids. Their whole job this summer is reminding me the season is short. Eat the ice cream. Jump in the lake. Get out on the ocean.
5.Sports. The World Cup in Vancouver and the Tour de France are both palette research disguised as fandom. Pink soccer cleats. International style. Colour trends showing up two years before they hit the mood boards.

Stripes are not a trend. They are a design constant. Vertical stripes lift a ceiling. Horizontal stripes calm a room. Bold stripes anchor a soft palette. Quiet stripes make a loud sofa behave.

Five we’re loving for summer:
1. The Hay Palissade Low Table for outdoor moments
2. Drapery, vertical, floor to ceiling
3. Otto Studio’s locally made striped wallpaper
4. Our own studio’s capsule rug collection designed in collaboration with supermarket studio (a small flex)
5. Emma Chamberlain’s reversible bold stripe outdoor pillow at West Elm

Save this for next time someone tells you stripes are “in.” They’ve always been in.
