Don't let the Sault winters freeze your hot tub! βοΈπ¨π¦
With the sub-zero temperatures heading our way in Sault Ste. Marie, keeping your spa protected is the number one way to avoid costly freeze damage. Whether you are running it through the snow season or closing it down, a little prep goes a long way.
Here is what every local hot tub owner needs to know right now:
βοΈProper Winterization: If you plan to close your tub for the season, the lines must be completely blown out. Any water left behind in the pipes will freeze, expand, and crack your plumbing. Open your unions to allow any left over water to allow a place to expand and add RV antifreeze.
βοΈ Keep it Covered: Use a heavy-duty thermal cover to trap heat and keep heavy Sault snow out.
βοΈCheck Water Levels: Routinely check your water. If it drops too low, the skimmer can draw in cold air, causing the heater to shut down.
βοΈRemove Snow from your cover to stop the risk of it collapsing.
βοΈ Check your chemicals weekly even if your not using it, this will help slow down corrosion and also from getting a green tub that needs to be drained in the dead of winter.
βοΈ Continue to clean & hose down your filters inside, so they don't slow down water flow.
π¨ Winter Emergency: What if the power goes out Or the Tub fails? π¨
If a winter storm knocks out our power grid, don't panic! Keep the cover closed tightly to trap the existing heat. A well-insulated tub can hold its temperature for awhile.
π‘ Pro-Tip for Extended Outages: If you have a backup generator, run a small space heater inside the equipment cabinet right near the pump and plumbing until the power comes back on or until you can get service.
π¨Crucial Safety Step: Make sure all your extension cord connections are kept outside the cabinet to prevent moisture and condensation from creating an electrical hazard!, you can cover it with a pail or small tote.
