Rabbits, deer, and mice do their worst damage to trees in winter when food is scarce. Slip rigid guards or chicken wire around young trunks, and keep mulch pulled back from the bark so mice cannot nest against it. Protect them now before the snow flies.

Your spruce are still drinking. 🌲

Evergreens don't shut down for winter the way leaf trees do. Those needles keep losing moisture all winter long, and every chinook wind steals more. If your spruce go into freeze up with dry roots, you'll see it in spring as brown burned needles.

So the single most important thing you can do right now: water deep. Not a sprinkle. A long slow soak that gets moisture down where the roots are. Spruce roots run shallow and wide, so soak the whole area under the branches, not just the trunk. Do it now, and again right before the ground freezes if we stay dry.

While you're at it:

• Mulch 3 to 4 inches around the base to hold that moisture in. Keep it off the trunk.
• Skip the fertilizer. No soft new growth heading into frost.

Water now, thank yourself in May.

🌧️ With a storm moving into Saskatchewan overnight, now is excellent timing to fertilize your trees! The added moisture helps carry nutrients down into the root zone naturally.

🌳 Spring fertilizer supports strong root growth, healthy leaves, and vigorous growth heading into the season.

For most trees, we recommend a slow-release balanced blend such as 10-10-10 or 14-14-14, or a nitrogen-heavy blend if trees need an extra push after winter. Apply around the drip line (not against the trunk) for best results.
