Most people will never notice this... and that's exactly the point.

When a stair nosing needs to span more than 12 feet, it can't be made from one continuous piece.

So instead of forcing a seam where everyone would see it, we planned ahead and used the timber beam to naturally hide the transition.

The result? A clean, seamless look that feels like it was always meant to be there.

These are the details that separate a standard installation from a custom one.

It's not about hiding imperfections or nonideal situations. It's about designing every cut, every joint, and every transition so the finished floor looks effortless.

This is why some basement floors never feel flat.

A flawless floor doesn't start with the flooring. It starts with the concrete.

Before we install a single plank, we inspect the entire basement slab for high and low spots. High areas are ground down, and low areas are filled and leveled to create a flat, stable surface.

If this step is skipped, the finished floor can have dips, humps, hollow spots, and movement underfoot. Even the highest-quality flooring won't perform the way it's supposed to if it's installed on an uneven subfloor.

At MD Hardwood, we believe preparation is the most important part of the job. Taking the time to properly grind and level the concrete ensures your floors not only look beautiful but also feel solid and last for years.

You'd never guess where this custom hardwood floor is being installed... 👀

A primary bedroom closet.

Not just any closet, either. This floor features a custom herringbone pattern with a black inlay, but the real craftsmanship happened before a single cabinet was installed.

Because the custom cabinetry wasn't in yet, every measurement had to be planned in advance.

We carefully laid out the entire floor so that once the cabinets were installed, they would reveal a perfectly even one-plank border around the perimeter.

There was no room for guessing. Every line, every cut, and every board had to be placed with the finished cabinetry in mind.

This is what separates true custom hardwood installation from a standard install.

It's not just about laying beautiful floor, it's about planning every detail so the finished space looks like it was always meant to be that way.

Most people think floor protection is just throwing paper down... but every floor gets a different level of protection.

Before we install a single board, we make sure every finished surface is protected.

On this project, the second floor and basement were protected with paper and recycled cardboard from our flooring boxes, creating a double layer that keeps the floors safe while work continues.

The main floor is a different story. With cabinets, trim, and multiple trades still coming through, we upgraded to 1/8" masonite for maximum protection against dents, dropped tools, and everyday job site traffic.

Every home is different, and so is our protection plan. Taking the extra time now helps ensure your new hardwood looks just as good on the final walkthrough as it did the day it was installed.

Not every hardwood installation starts the same.

This timber frame home in Forks of the Credit, Caledon, requires a completely different level of planning and preparation before the first board is ever installed.

Every timber beam has to be measured, planned for, and carefully undercut so the hardwood slides underneath with a clean, seamless finish.

The goal isn't just to make it look good. The floor also needs the proper room to expand and contract with the seasons.

Installing it too tight around the beams can create problems down the road, which is why every cut has to be precise.

Projects like this remind us that great craftsmanship starts long before the flooring goes down.
