We had the unforgettable pleasure of spending three days on Fogo Island as part of Shore Time, an intimate gathering of artists, architects and designers exploring the meaning of place and how we situate ourselves in relation to global economies and the natural environment.

Our deepest gratitude to Zita Cobb, Fogo Island Arts and the Shorefast Foundation for creating such a thoughtful and generous experience, rich with shared ideas, long walks and late-night meals. A truly memorable time in a remarkable place.

Thank you to the Rick Hansen Foundation for spending time with our team to explore accessibility in the built environment. The session examined both physical and attitudinal barriers, as well as the often-invisible, everyday impacts these can have on people living with disabilities.

One of the most thought-provoking takeaways was considering how to sensitively broach the subject with clients who may not immediately recognize its value. As designers of private homes intended to last for generations, we are continually looking for opportunities to shape homes where beauty and wellness intersect meaningfully.

There is often a gap between an appreciation of architecture and an understanding of what an architect can bring to the making of a home. Thoughtful design looks beyond appearance to consider how a home responds to its inhabitants, its landscape, light, materials and the particular qualities of a place.

That is why we are honoured to have been invited by ArchiPro, the Australian-based architecture and design platform, to be part of its new North American launch. The site offers an elegant presentation of contemporary architecture from around the world, bringing together architecture firms with homeowners who love design and are considering working with an architect to create their next home or cottage.

Akb is among the first Canadian practices to be invited to join the platform as a Founding Member. We’re thrilled to be part of it, and curious to see how its presence in North America will grow and contribute to the broader conversation around contemporary residential architecture.
