It is finally here! We have been researching the germination of different sedge species for the past two years, and we have compiled a report on our findings. We have not finished running all of the trials, but we wanted to make the information that we currently have available. We will update the document as species come out of stratification and the ongoing trials are completed.
We found that while many sedge species required a period of cold moist stratification, some were conditionally dormant, and they would germinate at lower levels without stratification if they were exposed to light. We also found that some would germinate if they were submerged in water and placed under lights.
Sedges are a great addition to any garden, we hope that this report will help more people grow sedges from seed.

Goodbye April! It was a lovely month full of early ephemeral flowers, site preparation and the songs of spring peepers.

This month we have been experimenting with germinating seeds in water. While many species did not germinate, we had some nice surprises. Bebb's sedge (Carex bebbii) and Spotted Joe Pye w**d (Eutrochium maculatum) both germinated well. And we had some germination from Blue-eyed grass (Sisyrinchium montanum), a species that is challenging to germinate reliably.
