We’re thrilled to be part of this year’s IDEA Awards shortlist!

Our Queenswood Daycare project has been named a finalist, highlighting the thoughtful transformation of a former modernist chapel into a vibrant, welcoming environment for early learning.

We’re proud to see this project recognized and grateful to all the collaborators who help turn thoughtful design into meaningful spaces for our community.

We look forward to celebrating alongside all the finalists at the awards ceremony on November 4th!

Light, texture, and a thoughtful response to its surroundings.

At the Bowker Collection, warm materials and generous glazing soften the building’s contemporary form, while carefully considered details create a sense of rhythm and scale along the street.

Architecture that feels grounded in its neighbourhood.

Looking back at a project completed in 2020, we love seeing how the Bowker Collection has grown into its surroundings over time.

The project brings together 43 homes and five commercial spaces around a landscaped central courtyard, creating a strong connection between architecture, community and the public realm.

Expansive glazing, generous outdoor spaces and a distinctive cantilevered soffit bring light, warmth and character to this neighbourhood gathering place.

With upgraded insulation, high-performance glazing and improved mechanical systems, Queenswood Daycare demonstrates how adaptive reuse can preserve the past while creating spaces that serve the community today.

Originally designed by celebrated Victoria architect John di Castri, the former Queenswood Retreat Centre chapel has been thoughtfully transformed into a vibrant daycare for UVic’s youngest learners.

Rather than starting from scratch, we worked with the existing building—preserving its vaulted roof, exposed concrete block walls, clerestory skylights, wood windows and vintage light fixtures, while introducing a carefully considered 70 m² addition.

The result is a place where the character of the original chapel meets the energy of a new generation.

The renovation balanced the character of an existing historic building with a fresh, contemporary storefront designed to better connect with the street and the surrounding neighbourhood.

Finished with new hemlock siding, lighting, a playful mural and a bas-relief wood screen, the renewed corner has become a lively part of Cook Street Village once again.

New life for an old favourite — and a corner that feels more welcoming than ever.

Some buildings have a little more history than others.

The Cook Street began with the renovation of the historic Oxford Foods building — an eclectic collection of four structures that had evolved over more than a century.

Our approach was to embrace that history while giving the building a fresh connection to the neighbourhood. New operable windows at the corner open the produce floor to the street, bringing daylight, views and a little more of the market experience outdoors.

A little old, a little new, and plenty of character.

Inspired by the character of Sea Cider’s original farmhouse, the new event pavilion was designed to feel like it has always belonged among the orchard.

The familiar pitched roof, simple gabled form, and generous openings echo the architecture of the existing building, while a more contemporary material palette and detailing give the new pavilion its own identity.

Rather than replicate what came before, the design takes cues from the original and reinterprets them for a new purpose — creating a natural connection between the old and the new.

For 's event pavilion on the Saanich Peninsula, the goal was to create a year-round gathering space that felt at home among the orchards and forest.

A soft, minimal interior lets the landscape take centre stage, while exposed wood framing nods to the working character of the existing cidery. Skylights bring in changing daylight from above, and a large folding window opens the room toward the orchard, Haro Strait, and Mt. Baker beyond.

Warm, simple, and quietly connected to place—a countryside classic with a subtle sense of newness.
