What if comfort begins before cooling is needed?
Shade reduces solar exposure at the source — while creating a place where people naturally choose to stay.

Ordinary bench. Extraordinary spot.
Tucked under Wettsteinbrücke, right on the Rhine.
Shade above.
The river in front.
A beautiful view across Basel.
And enough calm to make you want to stay.

Maybe that’s all a great bench spot needs: some shade, something worth looking at, a little quiet — and the real test:
you sit down for two minutes and stay twenty.

Same bench. Same public space. Two different approaches to heat.

On one side, a tree changes the conditions around people: shade, lower radiant exposure and a place where they naturally choose to stay.

On the other, a device tries to create comfort after heat has already become a problem — adding energy use, maintenance and waste heat to the street.

The point is not that technology has no role. It is about sequence.

Shade before cooling equipment.
Passive before active.
Microclimate before add-ons.
