My favourite 5 dye plants to achieve pink!
This pink comes from Una, a plant I was introduced to by members of the Kogi community while hiking to Ciudad Perdida. Growing high in the Sierra Nevada, it isn’t easy to find, but it creates beautiful shades of pink and soft purple.

So far, I’ve been introduced to five different natural sources of these vibrant hues: cochineal in Teotitlán del Valle, Oaxaca, where I learned about traditional Zapotec natural dyeing; Palo de Brasil, which grows on the hills around Santa Marta; Chingiza, shared with me by a Wiwa Community in the Sierra Nevada; la teca, growing here at the Caribbean coast. and Una.

Every new plant reminds me how much there is still to learn from nature.

Natural dyeing with teak leaves
Today, I finally started experimenting with teak leaves for natural dyeing. Many people in the region had told me about them, so it was time to explore their potential for myself.

Teak is native to parts of South and Southeast Asia, particularly India, Myanmar, Thailand, and Laos.

The tree was introduced to the Americas during the 20th century primarily as a fast-growing, high-value timber crop. Large-scale plantations were established in Sri Lanka and India, and later as well in tropical America like Panama and Costa Rica.

This is where teak’s history becomes more than a story about a useful tree: it also reveals how colonial economies transformed relationships between people, forests, land, and wealth and a tree associated with diverse tropical forests was turned into a globally traded commodity.

Today, the massive, papery leaves offer another possibility beyond their original commercial purpose: colour.

By experimenting with teak leaves as a natural dye, I want to explore how we can relate to plant materials differently. Using them doesn’t erase the tree’s history or automatically make the practice sustainable. But it opens up space to question the idea that nature’s value lies only in timber, productivity, or profit.

Conoce a Bleidis 🤍

🤍. Meet Bleidis 🤍
